How to Handle Getting Laid?Off

Layoffs are now widespread across the tech sector, with even the darlings of our Industry forced to make deep cuts. Having been on both sides of layoffs over the years, here’s my quick advice on the best ways to deal with this very tough situation.

Don’t Bad Mouth your Former?Employer

What:?Although it’s very tempting, and they may well deserve it, resist the urge to publicly (or even broadly) attack your former employer.

Why:?You may need references from your former bosses, and you certainly want to maximize the severance package benefits, e.g., health insurance, options exercise period, etc. Those are all at risk if your actions after departure are seen negatively.

Take Time?Off

What:?If your situation allows, try to take at least 2 weeks off. You don’t need to travel, but genuine time away from work, or looking for work, will be extremely beneficial.

Why:?Getting laid off is a traumatic experience, and everyone needs time to recover. You need to be at your best for the upcoming interviews, and this will also provide time to think about what’s most important in your next role.

Wave a Magic?Wand

What:?Take time to think about what an ideal role might look like and talk to successful people in your network about their careers. Do not let your daily schedule be guided by recruiters and other inbound leads.

Why:?Many talented people make their career decisions based solely on which companies have pursued them. While attractive, these roles are unlikely to match the jobs you would “ideally” pick for yourself. Give yourself a chance to do exactly what you want; it won’t stop you taking a safer, inbound opportunity later.

Getting laid off is a very unpleasant experience, and it’s easy to get caught up in the urgency of the situation. But if you can give yourself a little time to think and breathe, your next role might be a lot better.
