When you hear the phrase "adversity in the workplace," what comes to mind? Probably difficult coworkers and supervisors!
?
While it's true that there are many types of?challenges?at work, like changes in policies or deadlines,?strenuous relationships can?make make the workplace feel even more adversarial.
?
The truth is, we all face people who we may not agree with, even if it's not at work. The key is to have strategies in place that confront issues and provide an avenue to move forward. Here are some simple ideas:
?
Keep your emotions in check:?While the first response can usually be anger or frustration, it's important to remain professional and level-headed when dealing with difficult coworkers or supervisors. Avoid getting defensive or confrontational, and try to stay calm and objective.
?
Communicate clearly and assertively:?Be clear about your expectations and boundaries, and communicate them assertively but respectfully. Use "I" statements to express your thoughts and feelings, and avoid blaming or attacking the other person.
?
Focus on solutions, not problems: When discussing issues with a difficult coworker or supervisor, focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problem. Brainstorm ideas together and work collaboratively to find a solution that works for both of you. Avoid pointing fingers at why something may not have worked.
?
Document everything:?Keep a record of any interactions with difficult coworkers or supervisors, including emails, memos, and notes from meetings.?While it may come in handy in the event that the coworker takes things "next level," it also reassures that you are keeping yourself professional.?

Seek support:?Reach out to a mentor, trusted colleague, or human resources representative for support and guidance in dealing with a difficult coworker or supervisor. They may be able to offer advice or mediate the situation.
?
Practice self-care:?Dealing with difficult coworkers or supervisors can be emotionally draining, so it's important to take care of yourself. Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, and seek support from friends and family.
?
Remember that managing difficult coworkers or supervisors takes patience and persistence. Keep working at it, and remember that you have the power to change your own reactions and behaviors, even if you can't change the other person.
As a leader, it can be difficult to?weed out negativity before it takes root. And there's a difference between helping staff overcome disagreements and determining someone is just not a good fit for your organization.

1 年I love these solutions. I marvel at how much comfort is lost in not knowing how to apply them - particularly managing emotions (not imploding), and self-care (self what?) - which were the stumbling blocks of my 20's and 30's.
