The reality is that time is a finite resource—you can’t create more of it. But energy? That’s something you can manage, optimize, and replenish.
Energy Levels: The Missing Piece in Academic Productivity
Let’s be real—time management isn’t the full story. You can plan your day down to the minute, but if you’re running on empty, you won’t get much done.
Why?
The reality is that time is a finite resource—you can’t create more of it. But energy? That’s something you can manage, optimize, and replenish.
For me, my highest energy levels are in the morning—I can get more done in two hours than I could in three or four in the afternoon. And I know I’m not alone. Many academics find that mornings and evenings are their most productive windows for deep work, writing, or creative tasks.
But here’s the challenge: we don’t always get to choose how we structure our days.
In academia, we don’t control when we teach, when meetings happen, or even when we can run lab experiments. So, what can we do?
Boost What’s Already Working
Most of us already know when we’re at our best. The real trick? Taking that peak time from an 8 to a 10.
?? Optimize what’s already working. If you crush it in the morning, double down. Block distractions, set clear goals, and make that time undisturbable.
?? Small tweaks = big gains. Start your high-energy work session with a quick walk. Swap that second coffee for water. Work in 90-minute blocks with breaks.
?? Don’t force what doesn’t work. If afternoons drain you, don’t fight it. Use that time for emails, grading, or easier tasks instead of deep work.
Your Practical Takeaway
This week, instead of just recognizing your high-energy periods, fine-tune them.
Ask yourself:
? What’s one small change that could take my peak energy period from an 8 to a 9?
? How can I eliminate distractions or set up my environment for better focus?
? What’s one energy-boosting habit I can try to extend my high-performance window?
