How to hack a New Year resolution.

The data tells us 25% of people make at least one New Year's resolution. From that number, 35% successfully achieve the goal for the whole year, whilst 50% keep to 'some of them' for a period of time, with the remaining 15% falling at the very first hurdle (usually in January).
So what is the secret to success?
Researchers at Stockholm University have found that there is an advantage in classifying our New Year resolutions into 'avoidance' or 'approach' objectives. Avoidance goals involve the removal of something from life (sugar); whereas approach goals add something (exercise).
The research found that we are, on average, 25% more likely to meet an approach goal than an avoidance goal. This means that we can confidently introduce new positive things in to our life, but we should be wary of banishing something that we previously perceive as bad. In the case of the latter, the data tells us the smart decision may be to practice moderation.
In summary, the road to self-improvement is rarely easy. If you are focused on that journey in the coming year then good luck and why not make approach goals rather than avoidance. This means that you can stack the cards in your favor by introducing some new good habits, whilst justifiably keeping some of your most enjoyable vices (that's what the science* says).
