Testimonials from satisfied clients are like Krugerrands -- they’re beautiful, valuable, and you can never have too many.
You should include testimonials in all your marketing collateral: web pages, business cards, order forms, sales letters, email promotions, Facebook pages – ALL of it.
Yet, when people ask me to review their web pages, emails, and sales letters, the #1 thing missing from their materials is … testimonials.
But not all testimonials are created equal.
Wishy-washy ones like, “Dan was great” won’t sway anybody.
And testimonials lacking a full name and other identifying info, like “John S.” look sketchy, and can actually turn buyers away.
Not only that, but you can get so busy running your business that you fail to exploit some fantastic testimonials that are sitting in your email inbox, just begging to be used.
But there’s an easy way to fix that.
I call it The Testimonial Extractor.
Here’s how it works: By asking your happy clients two simple questions, you can extract highly valuable testimonials to use in your marketing. Don’t worry, there’s nothing sneaky or slimy about this! It’s as easy and ethical as having a conversation over coffee.
To begin, let’s agree that, if you’re any good at what you do, you should get emails from happy clients every few weeks. (If you’re not getting happy emails, you need to stay in better touch with clients, fix your product/service, or both.)
But here’s the thing. Most emails from happy clients are too short to work as a testimonial. Here’s an example email, from a past member of a monthly subscription service I used to run:
The Visual USP explanation is one of the most useful things I have ever come across! - William
Ordinarily, you might reply to that email to say “Thanks” and that would be the end of it.
But using The Testimonial Extractor, you can turn any short email into a full-blown testimonial in just two steps.
Step 1: Reply to any happy client emails to ask for more detail. Use wording like this:
William,
THANK YOU for the kind words! I really appreciate it!
What specifically do you like about the Visual USP Maker? How do you plan to use it? And what do you think it will be worth to your business in the long run?
Your feedback would be a HUGE help -- please reply when you can.

Here’s the reply I got from William in response to my email above:
What I like most is it makes your business category of one. I will be doing one for around Adwords and also my marketing coaching services plus I plan to help a web design colleague do one as well.
I believe long term this is worth millions to my business and any business who takes the time to implement it correctly.
Step 2: Write and send your client a testimonial that combines both of their emails, and ask for permission to use it in your marketing. Use wording like this:
William,
THANK YOU for this input -- it's fantastic and much appreciated!
Favor: Would you mind if I used your comments and name* in my emails and/or on my website, so that others might know what to expect? I'd be very grateful.
Here's what you've said so far, edited for clarity. Please reply with your approval if it's okay, and feel free to add anything else to your comments :-)

(Note:?William is in Australia and most of my clients are in the U.S. So, I didn’t ask to use his city and state with his name. But you should if you want to create the most credible testimonial possible.)
The result?
He replied with his approval and I had a killer testimonial for my next email promotion. I get testimonials like this all the time and have for years. Now you can, too.
The Testimonial Extractor is just two simple questions to pull out testimonials from your everyday emails and get your clients’ permission to use them in your marketing.
Try it this week and let me know how things go for you.

3 年These actionable steps are a game changer for me. I JUST tried this technique with a client and it worked beautifully! Directly asking for testimonials was causing me a lot of anxiety and therefore I was procrastinating. Thank you!
