How To Grow Your Business With Calm, Clarity & Focus
You’re passionate about what you do. You want to make a difference in the lives of your clients and customers. You have a vision and goals for your business and personal life. You put in the time, energy and hard work everyday to make that vision happen.
It could be getting your income to the point you feel confident in what you provide, comfortably cover your business expenses and have something left over to contribute to your family, put money away for your kid's college or whatever else truly calls to you.
However, if you're not seeing the results that you want in your business, it simply means you have a chance to assess, reflect and develop a path forward. As Zig Ziglar said, "The first step to getting what you want is to have the courage to get rid of what you don't".
That means you want to continually be in the habit of looking for what's working, what's not working and where you can improve.
This is where many entrepreneurs get frustrated. They know what they want to provide to their clients, they're excited about what they have to offer and they want to help as many people as possible.
I talk with entrepreneurs and business owners everyday because it's what I'm passionate about. Sometimes no matter what they do, many of them can't seem to get their business to where they want it to be. They often say:
“I’ve got so much to do and don’t have time to do it”
“There’s so many things going on, and I don’t know where to focus”
Most of them focus on meeting new prospects who may become clients. And this is key to building your business - connect with people to see where you can add value.
However, if you do it without a plan - it’s easy to get bogged down or feel stuck. People often get frustrated, lose steam or begin to doubt themselves.
And that only creates more of the same - grinding day after day with no real growth in their business.
Based on my extensive work with consultants, attorneys, instructors, coaches and the list goes on, I see 3 common things that take these passionate entrepreneurs off their game and cause them to spin their wheels.
So here’s 3 ways to save your time, energy and grow your business:
Find your GPS: Everyone needs a compass — something to let them know they’re on track. When you visit a new place, do you start the car and say “I’ll get there eventually”?
You probably want to know where you’re going, how long will it take and how to avoid any detours along the way.
The same goes for your business!
When you work hard everyday, it’s easy to get lost in the details and miss the big picture. Then days, months or years pass by and you look up and think, “What did I really get done in my business?”
Just like you use a GPS to find a new destination, you can use a roadmap to keep you on track and get your business to where you want to it be so that you can develop that lifestyle you want, have more freedom and do what you want to do.
Now’s the prefect time to develop your 1 to 2 year step-by-step plan to focus your efforts, have clarity and get better results faster.
Discover the magic of metrics: I talk with entrepreneurs everyday and this is one of the most common pitfalls that I see. Remember when Cuba Gooding Jr. yelled “Show me the money!”?
My answer to that is, “Show me the numbers!”.
Peter Drucker, famed management consultant said, “What’s measured improves”. It’s important to have goals and even more important to have success measures to know if you’re going in the right direction.
Determine the key numbers in your business that you want to improve, develop targets and monitor them closely.
Become a priority authority: Have you seen the example of filling a vase with rocks, pebbles and sand? People usually dump them all in the vase at once and hope they fit, but that usually doesn't work. There's a particular way to fill it so that everything can fit in.
This applies to how you plan for your business. It's important to get into the habit and think about the week ahead. Here's a few things to consider:
- Determine the most important things that need to get done
- Talk to customers, network, ask for referrals, market your offers (the big rocks)
- Take some down time to relax, focus on your health, connect with family (more big rocks!)
Whatever it is — schedule them in and fit the less important items around those things.
Conclusion: If you want to grow your business and achieve a certain lifestyle - whether it's spend more time with your kids, contribute to your family's finances, take ownership of your business to transform more people's lives or something else important to you - you can make it happen. Develop a solid roadmap to guide your daily actions, focus on the key numbers that drive results in your business and prioritize what's most important to create calm and clarity as you build your business.
