How To Grow a Shopify DTC Brand with SEO

Let me share a quick guide on what SEO is "really" for.

The goal of any DTC brand with SEO is 3 pillars:

  • Acquire new customers
  • Convert the customers
  • Retain them customers

The 3 segments are your brand's north star.

When you understand this, SEO gets more focused.

How?

Because all the BS gets kicked out.

I find this quote a little cheesy, but I sorta like it "Always start with why?"

It's a good place to start.

"Why are we building this content strategy? Will it help sales? Will it help our brand scale?"

Now, we're getting clever with our strategy.

What's The SEO strategy for a DTC Brand?

Your goal is to take organic market share.

Remember I spoke about:

  • Acquire new customers
  • Convert the customers
  • Retain them customers

You need to understand there's only so much market potential. Any good SEO knows this.

This means there's a cap on traffic and revenue potential with search marketing.

But this is a good thing!

Why?

Hear me out.

You know the potential, so now your brand needs a roadmap to tap into that market and acquire customers.

An example DTC SEO campaign

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to SEO. It pisses me off when an agency focus on purely selling more retainers and ignores building a custom strategy for a DTC brand.

If you want to increase sales, you need a custom SEO strategy. This is how you will increase market share.

Here's an example of an audit I did for an enterprise brand:

  • Dev team task drowning and struggling to help
  • Pages not matching customer intent
  • Google crawlers hitting junk pages
  • Weak use of external link equity
  • Weak use of internal link equity
  • Bad use of navigation layout
  • Evident GA4 was not used
  • Weak SKU organisation
  • Poor website hierarchy
  • Search console a mess
  • Google index bloat
  • Low resources

I mean, this is a simple overview.

It's stressful auditing (manually) a large DTC website.

But guess what? That's how you get deep into data to build a roadmap!

Let's Get Deeper Into Organic Market Share

You need to know which brands are crushing it in your niche.

You need to know how they're crushing it.

You need to know why they're crushing it.

Then.

You need to fill the gaps your brand has!

Does this mean you need to copy them?

NO, not exactly.

There will be certain elements you can "take".

For example, competitor 1 might have 17 crushing landing pages. You find this in an audit and realise your brand completely misses this segment of the target market. So you're losing market share and revenue. BINGO, you need to work on this.
