How to grow a podcast on YouTube

How to grow a podcast on YouTube

This week on the Colin and Samir Show, we answered questions from our friends Nick Martell and Jack Kramer about how to grow a podcast on YouTube.?

Nick and Jack started the finance media company MarketSnacks in 2012, with a podcast called Snacks Daily and a newsletter. They sold MarketSnacks to stock trading app Robinhood in 2019. This year, they spun the podcast out of the company and relaunched it as "The Best One Yet”

When they went independent, Nick and Jack asked Colin and I for some advice on starting a podcast on YouTube.?

Here’s our advice for people starting video podcasts on YouTube:?

  1. Invest in distribution. On YouTube, you’re playing a discovery game. Audiences will decide if they want to watch something in the split second it takes to scan the title and thumbnail. Podcast audiences are more likely to consume a full episode once they’ve started listening. On YouTube, losing someone’s attention means losing the viewer. Although there isn’t marginal production cost to putting up the video version of the podcast, there is marginal distribution cost.?
  2. Decide how you want to show up on YouTube. Find sources of inspiration for titles and thumbnails. For Nick and Jack, we recommended checking out other relevant titles / thumbnails in their genre - for Nick & Jack, we recommend checking out Phil DeFranco’s packaging.?
  3. Titles need to be searchable. Most podcast players have terrible discovery. One huge advantage of YouTube is that it’s a search engine. Title your podcast in a way that’s easily searchable to reach new audiences - and then you have to meet their expectations. Viewers decide very quickly if the video they clicked on is actually what they wanted to watch.?
  4. Scale back to what’s comfortable for you. If you publish a daily podcast but only have bandwidth to publish once a week on YouTube, do that. It’s better to put out less high-quality content, than more content you’re not proud of.?

I do think that it's down to the fact that this was more conversational than other episodes which are typically more interview-y.

Hey Samir Chaudry very excited to tune into this one. I've been trying to figure out how to use Youtube to grow my podcast. Been trying to figure it out and very excited!

Samir Chaudry Colin Rosenblum part 2 of Nick & Jack ranks as an all-time Colin and Samir episode for me. It was like being a fly on the wall of a strategy consulting session. More of this please! Great meeting you at VidCon btw

I'd like to add another point here Samir: Get acquainted with YouTube Studio. I've been producing my own show for almost 4 years now on Anchor, but the kind of statistical depth that Studio offers from the get-go is staggering. OG podcast distribution platforms have a long way to go. :D
