How to grow future female leaders in STEM
Last year, GM filled a position in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) role every 26 minutes. And yet despite growing demand for these STEM-related jobs, women are underrepresented and the gender gap continues to grow. That’s why GM and the national nonprofit Girls Who Code (GWC) are partnering to inspire and empower thousands of U.S. middle and high school girls to become future leaders in these fields.
To kick off our partnership, GWC Founder and CEO Reshma Saujani, along with a cadre of leading GM women and I are hosting a group of students for hands-on activities focused on connectivity, electrification, autonomous and future mobility solutions.
Through the GM/GWC partnership, girls from underserved communities will gain increased access to computer science education, mentorship and projects that demonstrate the real-world impact of computing through a model that significantly increases young girls’ interest in pursuing technology and engineering degrees. In addition, GM is giving a $250,000 grant to expand GWC’s Clubs programs to provide free after-school programs in schools, universities and community centers.
Becoming an engineer paved the way for my career. If you’re considering a career in STEM, I encourage you to pursue it! And, if you’re passionate about promoting STEM education to others, look for opportunities to spend time with students and teach them about the many possibilities and rewards. Together we can inspire and grow diverse, future leaders.

8 年Thank you Mary for your support of Girls in STEM! Great Article!!! Together we can make a difference in these young girls futures. I am proud to be a board member & past president of the Southern Automotive Women's Forum (SAWF) whose mission since 2011 is to promote women in automotive in the south. This is accomplished through professional development, to date over $200k in scholarships, and our ALL GIRLS AUTO KNOW middle school outreach program. We would love to collaborate with GWC on outreach opportunities. Please message me if there is someone I can contact to discuss this. Best wishes!!! Thank you for all you do as a role model for women in automotive!!!
