What is Green Hydrogen?

Green Hydrogen is a clean, renewable alternative to Grey Hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. It is made by splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity, a process called electrolysis. As per MNRE standard, “Green Hydrogen” shall mean Hydrogen produced from renewable energy, including, but not limited to, production through electrolysis and conversion of biomass.

1. Low Carbon Emissions: As green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, it generates low greenhouse gas emissions, making it an environmental friendly fuel source.

1. Catalyst for Industrial Transformation: Green hydrogen finds applications as a feedstock in various industries, including refineries and fertilizer production. Moreover, it plays a role in the chemical industry, particularly in methanol production, and is utilized in the steel industry as well.

Green Hydrogen: Essential for Meeting Net Zero Targets

Green hydrogen has the potential to become a key player in the global energy transition, providing a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, which can be a key enabler for India’s aspirations of building a low-carbon and self-reliant economy. To achieve these ambitious targets, Government of India has launched National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, to make India the Global Hub for production, usage and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The Ministry of New and Renewable energy will be responsible for the overall coordination for implementation of the mission.?
