How Great Leaders Effectively Communicate Vision &Mission

During a visit to NASA Space Centre in 1962 President Jack Kennedy noticed a janitor caring a broom, he interrupted his tour, walked over to the man, and as an ice breaker said.

Hi, I’m jack Kennedy what are you doing? The janitor replied I’m helping put a man on the moon, Mr. President

?

The project was called the Apollo project, the result of this NASA project was landing humans on the moon between the 1960s to 1970s.?Apollo11 put astronauts on the Luna surface for the first time.

I love using this analogy for team-building exercises because of the impact it had globally and because it teaches to every team the impact of a well-communicated vision

So what were the lessons for teams on this story?

Every organization with strong leaders must communicate its visions and missions so clearly that everyone on the team is clear of their role.

What do you do here???Substitute: What do you do for the team?

I’m helping put a man on the moon.

Everyone on the team must understand what they do on the team

?The best teams work with KPIs however they also understand that their KPI overrides each other’s personal goals.?

?How does the janitor’s role overlap with the critical delivery of the man going to the moon? Everyone helping the man is on a critical path, one lag in activity affects the final timeline and date of delivery.

We sometimes assume the most important person on the team is the man going to the moon every time we have this conversation it gets clear the?NASA?leadership understood the assignment and the leader was a great communicator.

Great communicators are figured out in the belief they created in the mind of their team members not their words

As simple as this story looks it tells everything you need to know about a strong team with a leadership big on communication.

A great leader must have a communication line that is crystal clear to everyone on the team.

How do you make your team members understand your mission and vision without making them feel lost??

Is your team Working for you or working with you?

Every team should embrace the NASA philosophy &always answer the key question: how does this action take us to our own Moon?

?Have I been able to make it so clear everyone understands not just the KPIs but the consequences of action and inaction?

These are the issues.
