There are many facets to being a great leader, and some of those are more important in a technology business.
I've been the leader of a technology business, an MSP specifically from day 0, bootstrapped all the way to being acquired and now currently enjoying some nice time off.
In my journey I've learned there are many qualities, skills and traits one must grow into in order to be successful.
Really, if you get the majority of these nailed, the business side takes care of itself.
TLDR; In order to be a great leader in a technology business, one must have the ability to inspire and motivate a team, think strategically and long-term, make difficult decisions, adapt to change, and build relationships. In addition, a great leader in a technology business needs to have the skills to understand and use technology, manage and prioritize projects, understand financial reports, and negotiate and close deals. Finally, the traits of a great leader in a technology business include honesty, integrity, passion, humility, and confidence.
I'll dive deeper in to each one of these in case you'd like some more context and specifics of my learnings.
The qualities of a great leader in a technology business.
An effective leader in a technology business is one who can inspire and motivate their team to achieve success. This means being able to communicate a clear and compelling vision for the company, and sharing this vision with employees in a way that gets them excited about working towards it. Great leaders in technology businesses are also able to build trust and rapport with their teams, which is essential for maintaining high levels of motivation.
I know from building my business I have many relationships for life with team members whom I've grown along side.
The ability to think strategically and long-term.
In today's ever-changing landscape, it's more important than ever for leaders in technology businesses to be able to think strategically and long-term. This means being able to identify opportunities and threats early on, and making decisions that will position the company for future success. It also requires an understanding of the competitive landscape and the differentiators that will make your company succeed.
When the future is unknown, tech leaders are supposed to know the most likely version well before their team.
The ability to make difficult decisions.
Leaders in technology businesses often have to make tough decisions - whether it's deciding which new product or service to develop, or how to respond to a major security breach. What sets great leaders apart is their ability to make these decisions quickly and confidently, without second-guessing themselves. They also understand that not every decision will be popular, but they're willing to make unpopular choices if they believe it's in the best interests of the company.
The ability to adapt to change.
The tech industry is notoriously fast-paced and constantly changing, so it's critical for leaders in this space to be able adapt quickly to new situations. This means being comfortable with change itself, as well as being able lead others through change effectively. Great leaders in tech are always looking for ways to improve processes and procedures, so that their companies can stay ahead of the curve.
The ability to build relationships.
Relationships are key in any business, but they're especially important in the tech industry. This is because the industry is built on partnerships - from the relationships between hardware and software companies, to the relationships between startups and investors. Effective leaders in tech businesses know how to build strong relationships with their partners, so that they can create a mutually beneficial ecosystem that everyone can benefit from.
I cannot overstate the importance of this one.
The skills a great leader in a technology business needs.
The ability to understand and use technology is essential for any leader in a technology business. Technology is constantly changing, and a leader needs to be able to keep up with the latest trends and developments in order to make informed decisions about their business. They also need to be able to use technology to its full potential in order to maximize efficiency and productivity.

The ability to manage and prioritize projects.
As a leader in a technology business, it is important that you are able to manage and prioritize projects effectively. With so many demands on your time, it is essential that you are able to identify the most important tasks and ensure that they are given the attention they deserve. This requires effective time management skills as well as the ability to delegate tasks appropriately.
The ability to understand financial reports.
Financial reports can be complex, but as a leader in a technology business, it is important that you have a good understanding of them. This will enable you to make sound decisions about investments, budgeting, and other financial matters relating to your business. It is also useful for identifying areas where cost savings can be made.
The ability to negotiate and close deals.
In any business, negotiation skills are important, but they are especially vital in the tech industry where competition is fierce and margins are often tight. As a leader, you need to be able to negotiate favorable terms with suppliers, partners, and customers alike. You should also be comfortable with closing deals quickly in order to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
The traits of a great leader in a technology business.
Honesty is one of the most important traits of a great leader in a technology business. A leader who is honest with their team will inspire trust and respect. Honesty is also important when making difficult decisions, as it allows team members to see that you are considering all options and making the best decision for the company.
Integrity.
Integrity is another essential trait for leaders in a technology business. This means being true to your word, keeping your promises, and following through on your commitments. Leaders with integrity build trust and credibility with their team, which leads to better performance and results.
Passion.
Passion is essential for any leader, but it is especially important in a technology business. A passionate leader is someone who believes in their product or service and is constantly striving to improve it. Passionate leaders are also able to inspire their team to be passionate about their work, which leads to a more positive work environment and better results.
Humility.
While confidence is an important trait for leaders, humility is also essential. Leaders who are humble understand that they do not know everything and are open to learning from others. This openness allows them to continue growing and developing as leaders, which benefits both them and their team.
Confidence.
Confidence is a key trait for any leader, but it is especially important in a technology business. A confident leader is someone who believes in their team and their ability to achieve success. This confidence inspires team members to believe in themselves and their ability to reach their goals.
With great power comes great responsibility
A great leader in a technology business needs to have a combination of qualities, skills, and traits that allow them to be successful. With the ever evolving landscape of technology, security, AI and people we must adapt to lead those who choose to follow us forward. I view leadership as a privilege and I am grateful to have lead many fine, very skilled individuals in my life so far.
