Off the back of a record breaking crowdfunding campaign, it seemed only right that I write a short note this week on the science of gratitude - so here's why it's important, according to science, in under 1 minute ??
The practice of gratitude is simply the act of mindfully being thankful. Every evening in a journal, or an app, write down three things you’re grateful for. You can try to get specific about why you’re grateful for that particular thing, but start with a simple thanks, and reap the benefits from there.
5 reasons to say thank you
- Being grateful makes you nicer. In this study from 2012, people with higher gratitude ratings were less likely to retaliate in negative situations, were more sensitive and less likely to be vengeful.
- 10 weeks of writing in a gratitude journal can boost happiness up to 25%.
- Studies on gratefulness have shown upswings in self-esteem—as the more appreciative you are, the more you are able to accept appreciation.
- Gratitude can make you feel more positive—which has plenty of brain-benefits of its own.
- Writing in a gratitude journal for 15 minutes before bed can help you sleep better and for longer.
