We are all aware of the idea of physical exhuastion but what we forget is that our minds and emotional energy are also finite and need to recharge and that depending on other life events, eg family stresses, ill health, relationship issues eg divorce, sickness in the family etc it is easy to become overwhelmed.
Just as when you look at the resources of a computer, every activity can take a certain amount of resources such as cpu, memory, storage, network etc so too when we do something it consumes mental effort, physical effort, cognitive bandwidth, ego depletion (decision making), attention & focus and emotional energy etc. You need to guard and protect these resources.
Equally well our energy varies during the day depending on our body clock type.
It is easy to think we are "super beings" but we are very mortal and everything we do consumes the finite about of "energy and bandwidth" we have.
Knowing your priorities and giving yourself time to recover is essential to avoiding stress and burnout,
Managing an aging parent, one becomes much more conscious about how finite their energy is and finding the right time for them to do particular activities and tasks.
Here are a list of activities and how they can deplete you. How you manage your "energy" budget is essential to managing yourself, even leisure and fun can tire us.
Even Recharging our "battery" and resetting consumes takes time and "energy".
We are subconsciously aware of the "load" that even leisure activities take when we say we are not in the mood for a certain activity, or watching a certain type of film etc....
Use this as you might look at the windows task manager or the Apple Activity Monitor to be more aware or of where your "energy" is going.
Using this chart will help you plan your day and manage your "energy" better.
