How To Go From Employee To Entrepreneur

How To Go From Employee To Entrepreneur

Are you tired of your job and feeling frustrated not knowing how to transition from employee to entrepreneur? Do you want your work to have more meaning?

These feelings are repeated time and again by my clients. Some are starting something new, some are moving into bigger responsibilities, and some, like you, are thinking about an exit strategy.

So, where do you start??The answer is knowing YOU better—Understanding?God’s design of you and creating the right business for you.

Know your personality before going from employee to entrepreneur

You may know I talk a lot about personality profiling. I used this approach as a teacher to give my students the best possible learning environment.

It is essential to understand how you learn and why you respond the way you do, your level of empathy, and how you can use your strengths.

To move from employee to entrepreneur, you have to know YOU.?When you are an employee, you have been hired, most times, for abilities and skills you have learned. However, when you are an entrepreneur, you need to know a lot more about yourself because you wear all the hats.

In?Calling Clarity, we help you create this business like a new “mosaic” of you. All your parts come together just the right way, so you create a mosaic of your business that reflects you.

What does this do? It energizes you, gives you perseverance, and makes you stand out. These things are essential as you present your offer and unique solution to your ideal clients.

Step 1: Start with God

Let’s review the first strategy to leaving your current job: knowing you.

The best place to start is with God, so go to God in prayer (with your journal). Then, ask about the pull you are feeling to leave. Make sure this is from Him and not just because you are bored, think you deserve something more, or can’t serve God at your job.

Make sure the restlessness is the Holy Spirit prodding you.

From employee to entrepreneur example

Let me tell you about Tashay. We spoke recently on a?Clarity Call?about her desire to leave her present job and do something more meaningful. She has an idea of WHAT she wants to do but does not know HOW to monetize it.

We did uncover that Tashay likes teaching, writing, and sharing biblical strategies/encouragement with blended families. We chatted about the intersection of what she loves, what she is good at, and what breaks her heart, yet she is still unsure what to do next.

My response, go deeper.

When you are multi-talented, gifted, and skilled, it can be hard to determine where to go. You see, Tashay is a process manager at her present job and does quality assurance for the customer service team. And in the past, she has led teams herself. So, she understands business well.

Step 2: Take action

Knowing yourself goes beyond just your passion; it goes to the core of who God has designed you to be.?That means looking at all your pieces to determine what God wants you to do now.

What would that look if you could create a snapshot of who you are now?

Think:

What learning have I done? Certificates, degrees, hours of practice, repeated actions on & off the job? Even hobbies you love spending hours perfecting. Jot down a few things that come to mind.

Next:

Look at the jobs you have had and are presently doing. Then, jot down what you did in those jobs. Not just your position title but the projects you worked on and in what capacity. And don’t forget those volunteer projects you participated in.

Then:

Make a list of the things you hold most dear in life.?These are your values.?These things guide you to act the way you do, react to others the way you do, and stand up for causes the way you do.

This is your WHY.

Step 3: Focus on those things that come up repeatedly

Another part of your snapshot is simply understanding how to use all those talents and strengths productively in a way that really energizes you to do the things you need to do to move out of the job and into entrepreneurship.

Strengths are just talents you have done repeatedly, and now you’re really good at doing them.

Make a list of your talents—anything?you can do. Remember, talents are not just ‘artistic’ endeavors. It can be anything from being well organized and a great listener to playing the piano and writing novels.

With coaxing, your talents can be brought to the surface and turned into strengths that will make your transition from job to entrepreneur smooth.

Client example

When Sharilee filled in her snapshot, we call this the 360-degree view tool in?Calling Clarity. It was amazing to see so many things repeated in her life. For example, she had expertise in writing, valued creativity, loved design, had talent in coordinating events, and wanted to develop and strategize solutions with others.

Everything pointed toward using her creative side to do the work she wanted to do as a Relationship Coach. When we talked through what I saw in the snapshot, I mentioned that she should consider Retreats to get her ideal clients in the door and then offer continuing coaching.

She almost cried and said?this had been a dream tucked away inside her. She’s always wanted to do this but didn’t know how or if she could.

Are you sitting in your office with a dream right now? Is there something more you know you could do if you only could focus on God’s design of you??I encourage you to create your lists and start looking for things that come up repeatedly. These are the things God will use in your new endeavor.?

Step 4: Move forward

In?Calling Clarity, we help you create your Mosaic Masterpiece Business.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10?NLT

Your pull into entrepreneurship is one of those “good things” He planned for you from the foundation of the world, and those clients you will help are just waiting for you to show up.

If you are ready to take your first step?to move from where you are in that job to where you want to be as an entrepreneur, I invite you to?get on a call?with me. Let’s see if?Calling Clarity?can get you focused on God’s design of you and move you into what He wants you to do next.

Remember, knowing YOU is the first step.?Without knowing yourself, you will try things you think will work, only to be disappointed. Maybe you have tried to start other things based on an interest or something someone told you you were good at. Perhaps you have a side hustle even now, but it is just not feeling right, and it is going nowhere fast.

Don’t resign yourself to staying in your job if God has called you to step out.?Let’s explore your possibilities together.?Make that appointment today.

Bonus step

I want to leave you with one final list to make, and it’s more like a checklist. These are questions you can take to God. Pray over them and journal about them. The entrepreneurial life is not easy. But God is using this adventure to transform you into the image of His Son. Are you ready to go from employee to entrepreneur?

  • Do you know your passion? The problem you want to solve for people.
  • Are you willing to work? You must have a strong work ethic.
  • Are you good with people? Introverted or not, you cannot be afraid of reaching out to people, talking to people, and being viewed by people.
  • Are you determined to make it work? This involves taking risks, working in trial and error, and reframing your ideas.
  • Are you creative? As you will be the problem solver for those you serve.
  • Do you have confidence? This is hard as a Solopreneur but grows when you commit to getting the help you need to make it work.?
  • Do you have the discipline to keep going? Consistency is key to doing anything well.
