How to Go Above and Beyond For Your Lawn

How to Go Above and Beyond For Your Lawn

As we get into the heart of spring, our cool season grasses are thriving and our warm season grasses are turning green. Our previous weed control strategies are hopefully beginning to take shape.

Pre-emergent applications should be already applied on both warm season and cool season grasses. Assuming the proper weed control and fertilizer strategy is in place, lawn feeding time is basically now upon us for warm season lawns. Understanding the importance of mowing and watering your turf type based off of recommendations is extremely important. For more information on mowing and watering tips, click the link below.

Now we know the basics, here are other 5 things that can be added to most lawn care strategies to continue to improve your lawn and help it reach its full potential.

  1. Aeration: Aeration directly helps to reduce compaction in the soil and allow air, water, and nutrients to get beneath the soils surface which will allow the roots to grow and expand. Aerations are a fantastic cultural practice that can really help thin lawns fill in much quicker. See aeration blog for more info.
  2. Micronutrients: Our lawns require 3 major macronutrients: Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. (N,P,K) Macronutrients can be received through fertilizer applied or naturally. Micronutrients are just as important as Macronutrients to your plants overall health. Micronutrients work alongside of macronutrients to assist in getting your lawn “just right”. The two major micronutrients 4-EverGreen uses are manganese and Iron. Call our office to find out how each one of the micronutrients are utilized by the lawn.
  3. PGR: Plant growth regulators are becoming more popular for homeowners for more than just one reason. PGR’s obviously reduce top growth of the plant and thus reduce the maintenance in frequency of mowing. While this is certainly true, PGR’s also improve turf quality. By reducing the plants top growth, the PGR is saving energy. The energy stays in the root system as opposed to the upper part, or top growth, of the plant. This ultimately allows the plant to store more energy and therefore, handle stress and disease pressure much better.
  4. Pest Application: Insects are abundant and can severely damage lawns and landscapes. Lawn pest can certainly be detrimental and very difficult to identify. Moles, mole crickets, bill bugs, grub worms, nematodes, and many more pest can kill or damage the lawn you have worked so hard to have. Some lawn pests are much easier to identify than others. Insecticides are available for use but early identification is critical in preventing turf damage.
  5. Disease Application: There are many turf diseases we see at 4-EverGreen such as Spring Dead Spot, Brown Patch, Stripe Smut, and many more that attack your lawn under the right conditions. Removing those (environmental) conducive conditions that may exist where possible can help prevent disease pressure from setting in or getting worse. Fungicides are available for control but preventative spray’s work best.

There are so many variables that are involved in allowing your lawn to reach its full potential. Soil type, PH, weather, and the right weed control and fertilizer program are just a few of the factors that can play a major role in how healthy your lawn is.
