How Giving Away Knowledge Makes You the Go-To Expert

How Giving Away Knowledge Makes You the Go-To Expert

Today, I’m diving into something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately...giving away knowledge.

It's a topic that might make some of us squirm, but trust me, there’s a good reason behind it.

My Mom's Concern

Recently, my mom reached out to me after reading several of my newsletters and social media posts.

She was worried that I might be giving away all my secrets for free.

"Aren’t you worried that people will take your ideas and run with them?" she asked.

At first, I was surprised. But then it hit me.

Her concern comes from a place of love, but it also reflects a common fear that many leaders have: the idea that sharing our hard-earned knowledge will diminish our value.

But I know better, and I want to share with you why that’s actually the OPPOSITE of the truth.

Why Giving Away Your Knowledge Builds Trust, Not Depletes It

As someone deeply involved in workplace mental health and impactful communications, I’m often asked, "How do I manage overwhelmed leaders with their stage, media and executive presence?" "How can I really make a difference in mental health at work?" These are the questions I tackle in my workshops, but you don’t have to wait for a session with me to start building these skills.

Sharing the knowledge that can help others is not about diminishing your worth. It’s about positioning yourself as the go-to expert and building trust.

I offer tools, frameworks, and strategies that help individuals and organizations thrive in mentally healthy environments, and here's why sharing them does not hurt my business—it strengthens it.

When you give away knowledge, you establish yourself as a trusted resource, a thought leader, and a connector in your field. People trust those who are open, and they are far more likely to come to you when they need a deeper level of support.

You won’t lose your edge by helping others. Instead, you'll build a community that respects and values what you bring to the table.

Case Study: My Journey with Speak with Impact Lab

When I started Speak with Impact Lab, my goal was simple: to empower leaders and teams to communicate with clarity, confidence, and empathy (on stage, in front of the camera and in the boardroom).

By offering content, newsletters, videos, and bite-sized tips on LinkedIn, I’ve gained a community of like-minded professionals who are genuinely interested in the work we’re doing.

The more I share, whether it's on mental health strategies, public speaking skills, or boundary setting in the workplace, the more people seek me out for tailored training, consultation, and speaking engagements. They understand that the real value isn’t just in the knowledge. I can execute it and make it actionable.

Here’s How You Can Start Giving Away Knowledge (and Why It Works)

  1. Write LinkedIn Posts: Share your knowledge, not just your opinions. People come to you for insights, so give them something concrete and helpful. This could be a framework, a personal story of transformation, or a “how-to” post that resonates with others.
  2. Host Conversations: If you’re a business leader, make space for discussions on difficult topics. Start a dialogue on mental health, team-building, or communication. People will feel heard and trust your expertise.
  3. Create Free Resources: Offer a simple downloadable worksheet, checklist, or guide. These small gifts of knowledge can lead to long-term relationships with those who are looking for more.

Your Knowledge Is Your Superpower

By sharing what you know, you’re telling the world that you believe in your own expertise. You’re proving that you’re confident in your abilities, and you know that no one can replicate your experience, your perspective, or your unique approach.

So, if you’ve ever been concerned about "giving too much away," take a step back and think about this: Every time you share knowledge, you build trust and position yourself as the go-to expert in your field. And trust me, people will find their way back to you when they’re ready to make a more significant investment in their growth.

I’m not giving away all my secrets. I’m providing a glimpse of what’s possible for those ready to dive deeper and take action.
