How to Get Your Tweets Indexed in Google

How to Get Your Tweets Indexed in Google

In July last year various articles reviewed how exactly Google was indexing Tweets, and since then Twitter has invested considerably in making it easier for Tweets to appear in Google’s search results.

However according to a study that analysed how Google indexed tweets, the total amount of tweets that are actually indexed is pretty scarce (Social Quant, 2015). The study showed that only about 3.4% of tweets were actually in Google’s index, and prompted Brandlective to investigate what companies can do to achieve more SEO exposure given that 96% of tweets aren’t in the Google index.

Tweets from accounts with high follower counts

The study revealed that its evident accounts with larger follower counts are getting more of their tweets indexed. Brandlective don’t believe that Google looks directly at follower counts, but rather that other signals are affecting which profiles get indexed more, e.g. links to those accounts’ profiles.

Tweets that include hashtags or images

Tweets that incorporate hashtags and or images appear to have a greater chance of getting indexed, according to the study. Brandlective suggest using high impact images to compliment important tweets, and leveraging hashtags to increase visibility and promote engagement. Brandlective cite the necessity of remembering the role of hashtags on Twitter, and state that they act as keywords that can improve the searchability of content across the board. The firm suggest turning a variety of important keywords into hashtags associated with all branded content, so that it appears in Twitter searches for specific topics.

Tweets backed by a strong social authority

One thing that is clear is that Google place great value on a socially authoritative profile. Brandlective suggest that if businesses want to get more of their tweets appearing in Google searches then they must increase their social authority. Increasing follower counts, receiving more retweets, fostering more engagement and staying relevant to the body of followers should be priorities for any business seeking to not only get indexed by Google, but also to improve their general brand awareness.

Tweets from fully optimised twitter accounts

Google are not indexing the great majority of tweets, but since ‘valuable’ tweets are now findable on Google Brandlective argue that the importance of having a well-optimized presence on Twitter has increased for businesses. The firm suggest keeping usernames and handles consistent across all social media channels, with landing pages for websites included in the bio - again to improve searchability.

Brandlective Communications is an online marketing agency that helps businesses increase their brand presence online. The agency specialises in website development, social media and content marketing. The firm argues that Twitter adds great value to Google searches for a brand, and encourages companies to stay socially optimised for 2016.
