Get Your Job Ad On The First Page of Indeed (With 5 Words)

In the past 6 months I’ve helped nearly 100 companies get their job adverts to the first page of Indeed.

How? Aside from job boards like Indeed, Google’s search function is one of the most popular ways to search for jobs. Your job ad will get priority ranking based on two key things:

  • SEO (a fancy term for using similar words as your customers/candidates)
  • Unique content

STEP ONE: Mirror What Your Target Market Is Typing

This is how most people search for jobs using Google:

[Job Title] + ["Job/Jobs”] + [City]

For example:

The closer your job ad mirrors what people are search for, the higher it will rank.

For example, if you include the string of words “Marketing Manager Job in New York” in your job ad you'll be more likely to show up when people search for this.

Yes, it's as simple as using 5 words: [Job Title] + "Job" + "In" + [City]

And now you know basic SEO.

Where and how many times in my job ad?

3 times: start, middle and end. Here's an example:

"ABC company specializes in the X industry and we are currently recruiting for a Marketing Manager job in New York. The company has over 300 employees across the country and we’ve been experiencing 15% YOY growth.

The responsibilities of the Marketing Manager Job in New York

  • Increase brand engagement by 20% within the first year by launching at least 2 new social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc).
  • Grow the marketing department from 4-6 people over the next 8 months. You'll be responsible for developing the careers of a Marketing Coordinator, Email Specialist, Event Coordinator and Administrative Coordinator.
  • Grow our email list by 10% and increase the frequency of our email marketing from 12 campaigns per year to 36.

If you are interested in applying for the Marketing Manager Job in New York, please include:

  • Your résumé
  • Examples of your top 3 marketing campaigns"

STEP TWO: Make Your Content "Unique"

Google and Indeed will give your posting priority if the content is considered unique. This means not writing what everyone else is writing like "results orientated leader" or "excellent communication skills". The more your job description is filled with this nebulous nonsense, the lower you will rank.

99% of job adverts don't contain any quantifiable deliverables - you know, the stuff that actually matters.

You will rank higher, and attract better candidates, if you apply the Time, Money & Manpower* concept to your 5-8 bullet points of job responsibilities.

  • Time: How soon do you need the successful candidate to deliver a result? How long will the project be for? How much time do you need them to reduce a process by? How long will the presentations or seminars they need to deliver last for?
  • Money: How much of a percentage increase in sales do you want to see (and how soon)? How much money (3,4,5,6,7 figures) will they be managing? How much money (use %) do you need them to save?
  • Manpower: How many people will they manage? How many people do you need them to recruit/grow the team by? How many other departments will they work with? How many clients/vendors/customers will they be expected to maintain?

* I also mean Womanpower and People-power

Don't write this: "create and develop the company's marketing strategy and promotional materials"

Write this: "create and develop an 18-month strategic marketing plan to increase sales by 18% - this will involve the launch of 20 new physical products and 2 new online services. The promotional materials will span 4 distinct markets and involve collaborating with 3 other department managers (Sales, Supply Chain, and Distribution).

Give it a try :)
