How to Get your Dream Job
In the military, I never had to worry about the job search process. After many years in I made that leap. When I started my search, I realized I was more than a little bit rusty. It had been so long since I had applied for a job, much less went through the whole hiring process. Luckily, I located a nonprofit organization that provided tips in updating my resume and provided a service that helped me tremendously. Job searching can be a super stressful and frustrating time. Here are 3 things I learned.
Use A Professional Resume Writing Service or Resume Writer
A professionally written resume makes you 38% more likely to be contacted, 31% more likely to get an interview, and 40% more likely to land the job. You can also earn up to a total of $5,000 more a year in your annual salary. The main advantage is getting past the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that most employers use to scan resumes. The ATS searches for specific keywords and phrases as they relate to the job qualifications and if these right keywords show up your resume might not even be seen by an actual person. There are so many organizations and tools to assist in crafting a quality resume and you don't have to pay for it.
Tell A Story in Your Cover Letter
Too often, people use cover letters to just reiterate their resume or not even use a cover letter. Tell a story about your career and specify why you would be a great match for the position you're applying for. If you don't research the company thoroughly and specify why you would be a good fit for the company, you will not be notified. Remember to tell the hiring manager about your career journey in a compelling cover letter story with the use of keywords from the job description as well. You are writing a letter anyway.
Use LinkedIn During Your Job Search
Nowadays, your LinkedIn profile is just as important as your resume, if not more. Not only do most employers check your LinkedIn page after you apply for the job, but LinkedIn itself is also a great way to find your next job. It is very important to keep your LinkedIn profile up to date. Search for organizations or tools to assist in rewriting your LinkedIn profile to ensure it is different from your resume or do that work to put your best foot forward. You will begin to see way more success getting responses and even see more recruiters reach out about jobs.
