How would you like to be pulling in over 100K? It’s tough getting a new job that pays that much—but you don't need to become a doctor or lawyer to do it. There are many companies out there looking to hire, and I want to encourage you today that you can get any job you want, even if you are unemployed today. I know all about the things most job seekers do wrong. I've done reality TV series on hiring people, and I assure you that your resume is not going to get anybody's attention. You could be a Navy Seal who graduated from Harvard with honors, but your resume won't get you hired because your resume won't be read.
Here are some actual tips to get you hired in today’s marketplace:
1. Get off the Internet and Get Face to Face—Don't be the guy or gal who does all their job searching on social media and Monster, that won't get you your dream job. Let the other 50 million people depend on the 'net' while you get yourself physically in front of decision makers. It’s one thing to pitch yourself on a computer screen, quite another to do it in person. Unplug and get outside to get what you want.
2. Ditch the Recruiter—The truth is others shouldn’t need to get you your next job. Headhunters and recruiters are representing many people and they won’t present you better than you will. You need to have the mindset that you are the only one that will make this dream job thing happen! Don’t leave it up to others and pass the responsibility to them. You are dependent upon you.
3. Sell or Be Sold—Everything in life is a sale and everything you want is a commission. If you want a job, you will have to sell yourself. Stop communicating from the viewpoint of what the company can do for you but what you can do for the company. My book Sell or Be Sold discusses how to sell yourself to decision makers about why you are the one they should hire.
4. Be a Unicorn—Make a great presentation to the decision maker. Don’t talk about what you have done in the past, but about what you are going to do for the company in the future. Make big claims and focus on making the company revenue. Things like being a team player, loyalty, and dependability may be some of your attributes, but they will not land you your dream job because everybody says they have those things in interviews. Stay positive and be memorable. This will involve you doing lots of research on the company before hand so you will be able to make a great presentation.
Do What Others Refuse to Do.
Your new job is to get a 6-figure job. If you have to take something less, take it until you can find that 6-figure job. Better yet, find ways to turn that 50K job into a 100K+ job.
Plenty of people are willing to hire GREAT people. There are always businesses looking for productive, solution-oriented people that can grow their revenue, and making 120K a year is not that much money if you provide great value to a company and you actually do the math.
No matter what your job is, you can always improve your situation in life. Keep adding skills, knowledge, and confidence and you will become more valuable to the marketplace.
