5 Tips on living in the here and now

There have been times in my life that I felt like I was not where I wanted to be. Typically when I stubbornly waited for other people or external circumstances to change, blaming them for my unhappiness or inability to move forward.

Eventually I came to realize that I needed to reframe my thinking. If I didn’t like where I was, it was up to me to change my situation. And, equally important, I had to ask myself: where, exactly, do I want to be??

Early in my sobriety I remember waking up each day and reflecting that if sobriety was all I ever achieved from that day forward, it would be enough. That was how much I valued and appreciated being clean and sober. It seemed miraculous that I was living a new life after so many years spent dependent on substances.?

But as time went by, my goals and desires expanded. I was living an entirely different lifestyle and as a result, my recreational activities and friendships changed. Eventually my marriage ended which precipitated even more change.

No matter what my circumstances, I came to understand that I needed to find ways to be content and happy in the present moment. Only then could I move forward with a clear mind and positive intentions. Some days were better than others – and that goes for today as well. Many things are out of our control, but how we navigate life’s challenges is completely within our power.

Here are some tips on how to be where you want to be, living in the here and now:

  • Keep a gratitude list – review it; update it; rewrite it when you feel dissatisfied with where you are. Gratitude opens the door to abundance.?
  • Create a “God” or Universal Source Energy Box. Write down what you would like to let go of or need help with and then put it in the box. Once placed there, rest assured, your request has been answered. Ask and it is given.
  • Start a practice of writing down your “wins” at the end of the day. Reinforce the positive aspects of your day rather than contemplating what seems to be lacking.
  • Recognize that life is a journey. The road is rarely straight - it presents many twists and turns but there is magic in the surprises. There are reasons for everything, even if we can’t see them at the moment. Accepting life on life’s terms reduces aggravation, worry, and a lot of wasted energy trying to either change things, or figure everything out.
  • Remember that dwelling on the past causes feelings of regret and dwelling on the future causes anxiety. Today is the only day that is guaranteed. When you can appreciate and celebrate life one day at a time, you will discover that you are exactly where you want to be. That positive energy opens the door to manifesting every dream and desire you have.

By following these practices I am grateful every day. I appreciate the little things - like the lady bug that landed on my hand today; the new skills I learned (and dared to attempt) in my anti-gravity fitness class; deciding to swim across the lake to Toronto Island with some people I've never met before; and the amazing feeling you get when you hug a tree.
