How to Get Into a Wetsuit: Tips for a Smooth Dive

Putting on a wetsuit can be a challenge for divers of any level, but there are some tips to help you get into it with ease. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Wear a Base Layer

Wearing a base layer can reduce the friction between your skin and the wetsuit, making it easier to put on. Some individuals believe that this may decrease the wetsuit's thermal performance. If you don't have a base layer, you can use a plastic bag to create a layer of slip between your skin and the wetsuit.

Stay Cool

Sweating can make it harder to put on a wetsuit, especially in tropical regions. Try to put on your wetsuit in a cool, shaded area. If you're already sweating, cool down with a quick shower before putting on the wetsuit while your skin is still damp. Wetting the inside of the wetsuit can also help the rubber slide on easier.

Seek Help

Don't hesitate to ask your dive buddy for help getting into your wetsuit. If there's a spot on your back that you can't reach, ask your buddy for assistance. Remember to return the favor and help them with their wetsuit too.

Roll it Up

If you're struggling to pull the wetsuit up, try rolling it up. Start by rolling up the sleeves and legs to within 1-3 cm of the end, then pull the remaining cuff over your ankle or wrist before rolling up the rest. This method reduces friction and prevents the wetsuit from becoming too tight.

Use a water-based lubricant

Many divers use detergents, conditioners, and talcum powder as lubricants, which can cause skin irritation and are harmful to marine environments, It's best to use a water-based lubricant, as it is less likely to cause skin irritation and harm marine environments. Unlike oily lubricants, water-based lubricants are better for the wetsuit and the environment.

Consider a Different Wetsuit

If you're still having trouble getting into your wetsuit, it might be time to consider a different wetsuit. Visit a dive shop to try on different wetsuits and ensure you're getting the right size. You can also consider wetsuits made from more elastic materials or with zippers at the ankles and wrists for easier on and off.

In conclusion, putting on a wetsuit can take some practice and patience, but these tips should make the process smoother. Don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries, as putting on a wetsuit is an essential part of diving, and it will get easier with time.
