Over the last few weeks, I took some time to look into my business and ask the question “What is the thing I want to focus on most to help my clients achieve success?” and the answer I kept coming back to was, “achieve consistency.”
I know that as business owners and operators we throw the word consistency around a lot. It usually manifests in this kind of advice:
- Show up on the platforms you want to invest in daily
- Make sure your branding reflects your personality
- Have your pitch ready to go in any circumstance
But none of those things are consistent enough on their own. You need to know who you are, what you can do, and why you believe in yourself way before you can build a consistent foundation for your business.
So, how can you build a consistent platform that enables the people you’re talking with to spend their money with you? There are two things you need to do before you hop on your next sales or discovery call.
Step #1: Build Your Personal Confidence
Wait, let me take a step backward. You might be asking, “Kristin, what the heck kind of step is this? We’re talking about my business, not my personal life.” I get why you would think that. But because I’m your friend, I need to tell you the truth.
If you show up to business meetings or discovery calls and are even the slightest bit unsure that you can deliver what you say you can, the other person will know. They’ll also resent you taking some of their time, because it’s precious. You have to have your story together. You need to believe that everything you say about yourself and the kinds of results you can get them is true.
If you aren’t sure, you’re in trouble.
If you’re generally a confident person and you’re just having a momentary struggle, remind yourself of these truths.
Truth Nugget #1: I was able to get [a previous client’s name] the results they were looking for. Now they are doing amazing things.
Truth Nugget #2: I spent [number] of years learning how to do this, and the person I’m hopping on a call with has no idea that they really need to take certain steps—ones I can help them take—to get the changes they want.
Truth Nugget #3: I do this because it’s what I’m good at and I love it. The doubt I feel right now is temporary, but the results I get for people are lasting.
And if you need more help with your confidence beyond these reminders, well, I wrote a book for that. It all centers on the most important story in your life: your story. The teen edition is my favorite because it has more—you guessed it—stories.

It’s a quick read.
There’s also a guided workbook if you want to spend more time exploring your story.
Now that your confidence is under control, let’s move to the second not-so-easy step: brutal self-honesty.
Step #2: Be Honest About What You Really Want (and Say “No” to Everything Else)
Brutal self-honesty isn’t usually super fun. I totally understand if you’ve been avoiding it. But, without it, you’re going to resent your situation, your business, and your life. That isn’t what you really want is it? And all to avoid a few minutes of feeling discomfort.
Discomfort is a temporary feeling. Living your entire life in a way that you don’t really want to— just to avoid a temporary feeling—is something you won’t be able undo later. Trust me on this.
So, are you willing to be brutally honest?
Here we go.
Are you actually doing the thing you want to be doing? Or are you doing whatever you think will bring you easy money?
Be brave with me for a minute here, what would you do if fear wasn’t part of your planning? What would you do if you could do anything and none of your outer or inner critics would say or think a word?
That big scary thought you just had—that’s something to build consistency on. That’s something to build backward from.

?? Literature reveals other people's stories ? Writing reveals our own
2 年This reminds me of Cait's point about resentment as a sign of burnout -- discomfort as a sign of something you really NEED to examine, a sign that gears from 2 areas of your life are grinding together, not working smoothly.
