How to Get Unstuck

What do you do when you’re feeling stuck? We can find ourselves stuck in so many ways—in unhappy relationships, unsatisfying jobs, situations of financial ruin, the list goes on.?

Shira Miller joined me recently on the LIFT podcast to talk about how to Get Unstuck And Live the Life You Want. Shira is a two-time TEDx speaker, Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, Chief Communications Officer of a $2 billion corporation, and author of Free and Clear: Get Unstuck and Live the Life You Want. Shira has experienced a high level of success, but that wasn’t always the case. She has experienced financial ruin, chronic health challenges, divorce, and an unfulfilling career. So what’s her secret?

When Shira found herself in a dire financial situation with her business on the brink of going under in the 2008 recession, she knew the only way out was through. Things were looking bleak for her, and she struggled to prioritise her well-being. But she was able to push through by looking for gratitude wherever she could find it, exercising a Lift mindset. Even as everything she’d built with her business appeared to be falling apart, she focused on the love in her life and creating healthy habits for herself through exercise and journaling every day.?

Now, Shira has a morning practice to help her maintain her positive attitude. She says she “decided to be a morning person.” She wakes up early, listens to a meditation track, journals, and goes to the gym, all before 6:30 in the morning.?

When I asked Shira about how she has sustained her success, she said: start with visualisation. See yourself in the place that you want to be. Write about it. Create a vision board. You need to see it in order to believe it. Then you can break down your goals in order to get to that place.?

When we’re unhappy with where we are, it’s up to us to make positive changes. Are you feeling stuck? What is your vision for yourself in an ideal world? What can you do today to take one step in that direction? It’s okay to pivot! If you’ve been pursuing a dream that no longer works for you, it’s okay to shift your goals. This can be hard on our egos, but Shira emphasises that “you are okay exactly as you are.”?

One way we can work toward being unstuck is creating a reverse bucket list. We’ve all heard of a bucket list, right? All of the things you want to do before you kick the bucket. Have you ever tried the opposite?


Make a Reverse Bucket List

Make a list of all of your accomplishments. I imagine it’s more than you give yourself credit for. Are you feeling healthy? Do you pay your bills? Do you have a degree? A beautiful family? A career you love? It can be as simple as a delicious meal you made! Take a look at your list. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. You have a list of all of your accomplishments, you are capable, and you can pivot your life or your career if you want to.?

I asked Shira what she recommends for people looking to take that first step toward being unstuck. She said—take a pause. Not necessarily a vacation, but a break from your normal circumstances. Take a day off work. Turn off all of your devices. Go to a park for a couple hours.?


Ask yourself:

What are my current circumstances?

What might I like to change?

It may seem simple, but this is something that so few people do. So if you’re able to take a pause, add it to that reverse bucket list. That’s an accomplishment!

We usually focus on how LIFTing others can benefit ourselves. Sometimes, like the oxygen mask on a plane analogy, you have to lift yourself before you can shift your attention to others.
