I mentioned in my last post that I took some time off everything I was working on
to have my baby. During this period I learned how important it is to slow down and breathe.
‘’A career person’’, ‘’ always on the go’’, ‘’ moving from attaining one goal to attaining another’’, these words and more describe me. :)
But during this time of my pregnancy and since my nursing, I realized the value and importance of breaks.
The truth is an abrupt or intentional break from work, career, life’s pursuit of goals, etc can be Refreshing or depressing. Whichever it turns out to depends on you and on your ability to be aware of your situation and the right actions you take.
This article is for anyone who is currently transitioning on his or her career, job, or any life’s pursuit or whatever reason it is, whether intentionally or abruptly.
In this 3 minutes read, I have provided 5 tips on how to get through this phase of your life.
Please leave your comments afterward I love to hear your thoughts??. If you are a working mom and you can relate with this also leave your comment.
1. Be Kind to yourself
You are deserving of Kindness, start by being kind to yourself. Change your focus from anything that may drain you and allow yourself to breathe, laugh, stay calm, and engage in simple activities that relax your mind like listening to music, exercising, meditating, sharing happy times with kids or friends and loved ones. For me staring at my baby’s face makes it all worth it and makes me happy.:)
Stay around people who make you happy and liven you. Avoid those who drain your energy or make you question yourself. Remember that you are on a break and at this point your mind is vulnerable. Guard your mind, guard your thoughts. Be conscious, be mindful about your thoughts and activities.
2. Have the end in mind
Remind yourself of why you started and where you are headed. I find that Continuously painting this beautiful picture in my mind and in my head of my goals and how close I am to attaining them is very helpful.
I love one of Steven Coveys best-sellers ‘’Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’’. He says, ‘’Begin with the end in Mind’’.
With a goal or goals always in front of you, your mind is in a continuous conceptualizing and attaining mode that it hardly would have the time to stray into anything else. Develop and incorporate the Habit of always having a ‘’Personal Mission Statement’’. Write your vision, paste it on a board in your room, or somewhere you can see it daily. Remind yourself of why you started and where you are headed.
3. Happiness is a journey, not a destination
Preparing your mind daily to think like this is vital to fighting off negative thoughts in your head. Happiness is a journey and not a destination. Remind yourself that the time for my happiness is today not tomorrow.
Aim at your goals but enjoy every moment of your life. Yes, enjoy even the temporary pause, Sometimes life rushes us and we may not slow down or take a pause in our daily life’s pursuit unless we are compelled to. Life’s continuous pursuit may never have allowed you to take a break.
So appreciate the break make the most out of it.
A temporary pause is not the end. Just as commas (,) and periods (.) were created to serve different purposes. Remind yourself that this break is just a comma so make the most out of it.
4. Take long walks, Exercise daily, regularly
Even if it’s for short periods like 30mins. Walking forhealth.org.uk states that’’ A good walk can do wonders for your mental wellbeing. It improves self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleeps quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active helps those who are depressed recover.
5. Life itself is a Risk
If you have taken a flight before you know that experiencing turbulence is very common. I recall my flight to South Africa in 2015, we experienced so much turbulence that my heart skipped several times before we arrived at O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Looking back now, I remember that once we were in the air, I really could do nothing else than to pray. Our lives wherein God's hands. Let’s face it, there are situations that happen, and you really cannot do much. If you find yourself compelled to an abrupt break for any reason, PRAY!
