How to Get Through a Week Like This

How to Get Through a Week Like This

As I've reflected on this challenging time and prepared for the month of Thanksgiving, I realized that there is a precursor of Gratitude. Before we can Give Thanks, we must Accept.??

Acceptance is intertwined with Gratitude. We cannot be Grateful for anything we do not Accept.?

“I am grieving my wife's death every day.” Accept it.

“My teenager won’t talk to me.” Accept it.

“I am angry about what’s happening in this country.” Accept it.

“I just found out that I have a risk factor for Alzheimer’s.” Accept it.

“My family members and I disagree on so many things.” Accept it.?

To accept does not mean to “like.” It's allowing something that is to coexist within you without resistance. Acknowledging that what is is.?

Rather than being deflating or immobilizing, Acceptance can be exhilarating. When I discovered I might have a risk factor for Alzheimer’s, I read the book “The End of Alzheimers.” Since starting on the regimen the author suggests, I am remembering names better, have lost most of my belly fat and have a lot more energy.?

Becoming sad about our sadness, or angry about our anger, or nervous about our fears never feels good or peaceful.?

“But things aren’t peaceful in my family,” you might say. Accept it. ?

Or don’t. You can always take a moment to practice the alternative. Look out a window right now, find a tree, and tell it that it shouldn’t be doing what it’s doing - growing in that direction or releasing its leaves.

Now find a cloud in the sky and tell it that it shouldn’t be moving so fast or blocking the sun.???

Finally, look at your own hand. Tell it that it shouldn’t be that size, or that your fingernails shouldn’t keep growing.

That's how pointless resistance is. It’s giving our focus and power away to arguing with what has already manifested. And it keeps us from manifesting more of what we want.???

I invite you to take a day this week with no resistance. If you forget and start resisting, just Accept it. Then, every time you find yourself releasing a resistant thought, thank yourself for doing so!?

Remember, no resistance doesn’t mean no disagreeing. It simply means that you accept that you disagree. You may be resisting this challenge right now. Accept it.

See if you can go a day without resistance or judgment. You’ll find that Acceptance makes life easier. Like water flowing downstream, you’ll still have passion. You’ll still have strong opinions. You just won’t be trying to flow upstream, pushing against what is.?

You can choose to continue giving your power away by “shoulding” on yourself and others, and trees, and clouds, or you can shift into Accepting.?

The great news is that as you start taking your power back, you'll find yourself Grateful for the fact that you are more powerful than you’ve ever realized.?

?

The choice is yours. Accept it.
