How to Get on Television

Have you ever seen a business expert on television and thought, "How did they do that? I want to be on television." It's possible! With a good pitch and strategy in place, you can be on television representing your expertise or your product.
Here are some tips to get started:
1) Start local - it's easier to land on local television than national (unless you are in New York City, the #1 television market - it's doable just more competitive). National shows want to see you have experience on television before they put you on, live.
Great news - you don't have to be "local" to your area to land on local television. Covid changed that and you can now pitch anywhere. Just make sure you have all of your tech in place for a remote shoot.
2) Have a story idea that relates to their audience. Do your homework and learn the station's demographic. If their market is 30-year-old stay-at-home moms, a business pitch probably won't work. Know which segment your story fits into. Is it a light morning show type of story or harder news for the 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 or 11:00pm slots?
Make sure you know if the hour you are pitching takes guests. Some do not.
3) Know the television station. Watch and see how they cover stories and when they use guest experts. By pitching exactly what they do on a regular basis you are more likely to get the yes.
4) Television is visual. If you have b-roll (video related to your story that you took), a product, a book, pictures, anything visual, put that in the pitch. Television likes to go away from just two talking heads so it's important to add that.
5) Back it up with statistics. Ride the coattails of a reputable source, agency, or association that is doing research. Use their data to give your pitch legs. Position yourself as the expert in your industry talking about their study. Link to the study in your pitch.

Here's a short 1-minute video I did to give you some more ideas:
Television is a great medium to expose your business to hundreds of thousands, even millions of potential new customers. The more you can do to prepare, the more likely you are to get the yes and starting getting that massive visibility.
