How to get into Tech | Roles & Avenues

#Tech is a huge industry that is forever growing. From building to designing to hiring tech talent, there’s a huge diversity in the roles and responsibilities you can have within the tech industry. You could be a recent graduate, career starter or a career changer, it’s never too late to get started.?

With any job, it can become overwhelming to decide which role is right for you. The first step is to figure out what you’re passionate about.? Doing research on the different roles within tech will help you define your search and identify the skills you need.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the roles we offer in tech consultancy:

?? Product Consultant - Product Owner:? “A role on a Scrum team that is responsible for the project's outcome. The product owner seeks to maximise a product's value by managing and optimising the product backlog” (Hoffman, 2021).

?? Delivery Consultant: Work alongside project teams, customers and management to ensure products are delivered on time. They play a key role in managing conflicts and ensure all stakeholders are informed about the product’s status while trying to mitigate them.?

?? UX/UI Consultant - UX/UI Designer: User experience design is the process of planning the experience a person has when they interact with a product (Oppliger, 2021). UI (User Interface) design is the user-centred approach to designing the aesthetics of a digital product (ibid).?

?? Software Engineering Consultant: ?A person who designs, develops and maintains computer software (Workable, 2022). They use their creativity and technical skills and apply the principles of software engineering to help solve new and ongoing problems for an organisation (ibid). There are a variety of specialisms within this field from Front-end Engineer, Back-end Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer and many more.?

?? Agile Coach: An agile coach helps organisations, teams, and individuals adopt agile practices and methods while embedding agile values and mindsets (Scrum Alliance, 2022). The goal of an agile coach is to foster more effective, transparent, and cohesive teams, and to enable better outcomes, solutions, and products/services for customers (ibid).?

?? Talent Partnerships Associate: A person who takes part in finding and hiring talent for the various teams. They are responsible for delivering an excellent candidate experience while managing and creating strategies for the individual team’s recruitment process.?

?? People Operations Associate: A person who has a variety of responsibilities from organising office events, managing employees benefits and overall wellbeing while ensuring the company maintains a high retention rate. A People’s Associate also handled HR tasks such as contract and employee onboarding.

?? Finance/Payroll Associate: Someone who is responsible for payroll.?

?? Marketing Associate: They are responsible for planning and implementing marketing and advertising activities (Glassdoor, 2022). They understand the extensive details of marketing and are familiar with ways to analyse market research and customers' behaviour (ibid).

?? Business Development Associate: A person who is responsible for identifying potential new clients and building relationships with key stakeholders. They build these relationships to sell a company's offering and convert them into potential business opportunities in the future.?

You can decide whether you are more of a planner, creator, builder or people oriented person. Think about what skills you currently have, and what you are passionate about.?

To get into Tech, there are a few avenues to go down

You could start with a short course to get certified and gain more knowledge within a specific field - with this option, the organisation offering the course often helps you get your foot in the door by coaching you through job applications and interviews. Most companies value candidates who have the basic understanding of a practice and it also shows you are serious and passionate about getting into the field.

On the flip side of it, you might consider a graduate role or internship. This will give you hands-on training and experience for the role. You will get to directly experience what it’s like working for a tech company and get mentoring from experts in the field.?

Don’t be afraid to reach out to Tech companies talent team or professionals on LinkedIn or similar websites to start building your network. It’s already great to have these connections to gain further insight into specific roles and trends but could also lead to potential job opportunities in the future.???
