HOW TO BE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Graphic Designing is a vast field and its importance is increasing rapidly. A lot of start-ups, that, are going to be huge in the future, are in search of Graphic Designers who can provide value to their brands by designing spectacular visuals. Maybe, you are one of those graphic designers, who can provide value to such brands. But, first of all, you need to be a worthy graphic designer and prove your worth by showcasing your work and exhibiting your projects. Here are a few prerequisites for becoming a graphic designer:

  • Reason
  • Aim
  • Passion
  • Motivation
  • Inspiration
  • Creativity
  • Mentorship

Reason

Having a strong reason to start designing is very important as it will help you to stay consistent. Sometimes, you completely lose all motivation and patience, but, if you have a powerful reason to stick to your goal, you are going to be consistent – even when you feel like you are not going to get it done.

Note: Thinking of Money as a?reason?to help you stay consistent and patient is not going to help. Think of something big.

Aim

Having an aim is very important before starting something. If you don’t have any aim, you are not going to have a reason to be consistent and ultimately you are not going to be successful. So, before starting Graphic Designing, you must have an end goal.

Passion

Passion is going to support you strongly to achieve your goals. If you are passionate about designing, there is a high chance of success in this field. If you are not passionate about designing, then most probably you are going to be exhausted after some time, and eventually, lose all interest and patience and will end up quitting designing.

Motivation

Motivation is important to give you an initial push-start in anything. You should try to keep yourself motivated by making daily goals and trying to achieve those goals, and by surrounding yourself with people of your field.

Inspiration

Inspiration is important to keep yourself on track. Inspiration can help jump-start the creative process by?giving you new ideas and perspectives to consider. It can also help you come up with different ways of solving a problem.

Graphic designers can find inspiration in many places, including other designs, nature, art, and even everyday objects.

Creativity

Another important requirement to be a graphic designer is to be creative. When you design something creative and unique, it gives you a sense of achievement and helps you to be motivated and strive to create even more better designs.

Copying and pasting the work of other designers is not CREATIVITY.

Mentorship

Having a mentor is very helpful if you want to be a designer.?A mentor will?support you, cheer you on, provide feedback, give you advice, and help you define and reach your goals. It can be a key relationship in your life and one that has the potential to impact your choices and career trajectory significantly.

SELECT A NICHE

Graphic Designing is a broad field, and there are a lot of niches. Every niche has its own requirements related to the design, there are different perspectives, and areas to be taken care of. One person cannot acquire knowledge of all the niches at once. It is very important for a person to select a niche and work on it with all his strength.

  • Branding/Identity design
  • Marketing design
  • Landing page web design
  • UX/UI design
  • Editorial design
  • Illustration
  • Typography design
  • 3D modeling

SELECT SOFTWARE ACCORDING TO YOUR WORK

First of all, you need to select a niche you are going to dive in deeply. Then you have to do a bit of research that which softwares are going to work best for you and after that, you should work on each of those 2 or 3 shortlisted softwares and then finally, you will know, with which software you are comfortable.

There are many softwares for graphic designing, for example:

  • Adobe Photoshop

LEARN SOFTWARE FROM BASIC TO ADVANCE

Once you selected software, you should start working to learn it. There is a lot of free and paid learning material, from basic to extreme advance, in almost every language. You should start from basics and gradually, but, steadily move towards advanced.

You need to be the best in your field to stand out from the competition.

Invest your time in learning the software and do a lot of practice. Work on dummy projects related to your niche, do experimentation, try new things, get suggestions from people in your niche, and try to improve your skill day by day.

In the beginning, work on the quantity, create a lot of designs – good or bad, whatever. But the point is, Quality comes with Quantity.

PORTFOLIO

Now, at this point, you are a designer. You have done a lot of dummy projects. You should showcase this work to the world in order to aware people of your work. Having a website to exhibit your work is an excellent idea, but, if it seems difficult to you, you can showcase your work on social media or maybe on?blogger.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

Social Media presence is very important and useful for a graphic designer. Start making content related to your niche on social media so that people start to notice you and your work. Once people start to understand the worth of your work and the value you have provided to different platforms and companies as a graphic designer, they will come to you if they needed any type of work related to your niche because they will have trust in you and your work.

You can get potential clients from social media. But firstly, it is important for you to make an audience who is interested in your work, and who likes your work. You can use various social media platforms like:
