Navigating Mental Health Conversations: What to Say When You're Not Fine.

Navigating Mental Health Conversations: What to Say When You're Not Fine.

As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month this May, it is crucial to emphasize the significance of open communication when it comes to mental well-being. Often, individuals find it challenging to express their true feelings, especially when they are struggling. Here are some suggestions on what to say when you're not feeling fine:

  1. "I'm having a tough time right now, and I could use someone to talk to." Acknowledging your struggles and expressing the need for support can be a powerful first step in seeking help.
  2. "I'm feeling overwhelmed, and I'm not sure how to cope." It's okay to admit when things feel like they're too much to handle. Sharing this can lead to constructive discussions on coping strategies.
  3. "I'm struggling with my mental health, and I think I may need professional help." Recognizing the need for professional intervention is a brave and proactive decision towards improving your mental well-being.
  4. "I'm feeling anxious/depressed/lost, and I'm not sure how to navigate these emotions." Naming your emotions can help you and others understand what you're going through, paving the way for meaningful conversations.
  5. "I'm not okay right now, but I'm working on it." Expressing that you are actively taking steps to address your mental health can offer hope and reassurance to both you and those around you.

Remember, it's okay not to be okay. By vocalizing your struggles and reaching out for support, you are taking important steps towards prioritizing your mental health.

Let's continue to foster a culture of understanding, empathy, and open communication to support one another through our mental health journeys.

Great points Hanna! Creating a space where individuals can ask for help without feeling inadequate or judged by others is crucial. On the flip side, what if employers treated mental health as mental fitness, with daily mental workouts and empowering employees to identify symptoms and seek professional help before burnout occurs? I'd also consider pairing authenticity with boundaries, being aware of cultural norms, and finding an inner circle of trusted individuals. Hannah Austin, MBA, CPC
