Master communicators are always on the cutting edge. When you think back and look at the master communicators in your life, I can guarantee you one thing. You can always count on them to be relevant, to be on the cutting edge, to be sharp, to be current. That is so significant.
When I talk to my mentors, when I talk to my mastermind team, when I talk to people in my life that I believe are eagles, people that are just soaring in life and living life at an incredible level in business and in their relationships and in their professional growth and development and achievement, they're always on the cutting edge. They're always relevant. They know what's going on in the marketplace. They know what's going on in their industry. They're well read. They're well versed. They can quote other experts in the field. They can quote other top successful people in their field. Listen, whatever your industry is, know the top dogs in that industry and know what they say about it.
In the publishing industry, I know the kind of books that I write. I know the quality of the kind of books that I write, and so I make sure that I read all the stuff that's out there that represents the level of material that I produce. So I'm current on Robert Kiyosaki and T. Harv Eker, Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield, Michael Beckwith and The Secret,Og Mandino, Zig Ziglar, Les Brown,Tony Robbins and all the other greats in this world.I make sure that I'm well read and well versed in my field, in my industry.
So my question to you is, what is that to you? What does it take? Who do you need to study? Whom do you need to learn from to be relevant and current in your industry? Powerful speakers and master communicators are well read and they're well versed in their industries. Readers are leaders. The average American is not a good communicator because the average American only reads about one book a year after college. The average successful businessperson, master communicator, the average self-made millionaire in America reads one book a month. Readers are indeed leaders. Read and study. Stay sharp. Stay on the cutting edge. Even if you have to get summary notes or Cliff notes, be the kind of individual that knows a little bit about what's going on.
One simple easy way that you can stay current is by the web browser that you pick, like for myself, I have USA Today as the opening webpage, the homepage. So anytime I go on the Internet, the first thing I see is USA Today, and I get a quick glimpse of everything that's going on in the country, and a lot of times, even in our world, and I don't study the whole page for long, but I do take a quick look, and I just say skim and then I know what's going on in the political arena. I know what's going on in the financial arena. I know what's going on in fuel and energy. I have some idea of what's going on in healthcare. I have some idea of what's going on in the business world. I have some idea what's going on in the entertainment world.
It's really significant that you be relevant, you be sharp, you be current, you know what's going on. Master communicators have an ability to have a wherewithal and an understanding of what's going on in the marketplace. You're not going to catch them off guard. You're not going to catch them by surprise. They don't know everything, but they are current and they're relevant. If you want to become a master communicator, be on the cutting edge. Stay around, cutting-edge people. Read what cutting-edge people read.
Talk to your mentors. Talk to your coaches. Talk to your advisory team, and say, "Hey, what great books are you reading? What great books are you studying? What books, what tapes, what CDs, what DVD series changed your life in an incredible way?" Because that's what you need to be reading. When I get around my mentors, I ask them, "What books are you reading currently?" So I can go out and get that book and inspire myself, and empower myself with the same information. Ask the right questions, you'll get the right answers. Master communicators are always on the cutting edge.
So my question to you is how can you improve your overall communication skills by becoming more well read? What books do you need to read? What relationships do you need to develop? What systems do you need to purchase? What audio programs and DVD programs do you need to invest in so that you can be on the cutting edge in your industry?
