If this is your first time having a professional business portrait taken, you might not know what to anticipate. Some of the most frequently asked questions from clients include: What should I wear? Do I need to have my hair done professionally? What if I have a pimple?
First and foremost, take a deep breath and relax. You hired a professional photographer for the job, which means you get to enjoy the benefits of their experience. They have seen it all, and feeling nervous about the photos is completely normal. However, with some preparation and guidance, you will end up with a business portrait that showcases you as the skilled and dedicated professional you are!
To assist you in your preparation, I've put together this guide on how to get ready for your business portrait photoshoot. Let's get started!
Selecting the Right Outfits
When choosing what to wear, consider the image you want to convey. The attire of an art gallery owner may differ from that of the CEO of a financial company. Determine what is appropriate for your profession and what makes you appear as professional and confident as possible.
A simple rule to follow when picking your outfit is to keep it understated. Opt for solid colors and steer clear of loud patterns or bright hues that can detract from you or even make your skin appear washed out in photos.
It's always wise to wear clothing that can easily be added or removed, such as a blazer or cardigan over a blouse or button-up shirt. This will allow for a variety of looks. Also, make sure to iron or press your clothes before the photoshoot. Wrinkles can detract from a professional appearance.
Take Care of Your Hair and Makeup
A business portrait photoshoot is a great opportunity to indulge in a little self-care. Visit your hair salon to get your hair styled for the best possible results. Pack a brush and any hair products you use in your bag, in case you need to touch up your hair throughout the day.
If possible, consider visiting a professional makeup artist. This is especially important if you don't usually wear a lot of makeup or are uncertain about the amount to apply. Let the makeup artist know that you're having your business portrait taken, and they will know how to apply makeup that will look great in your photos.
If you prefer to do your own makeup, start with a minimal approach. Apply enough to cover any blemishes or red spots and gradually add more. Bring your makeup with you to the photoshoot in case you need a touchup.
For men, avoid shaving just before the photoshoot, as your skin may be sensitive and red. Instead, shave the night before and use aftershave or a cooling gel to help soothe any discomfort. Don't be afraid to use a little makeup as well to conceal any blemishes.

Rest and Hydrate!
In preparation for your business portrait photoshoot, make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy in the photos. Avoid consuming alcohol and heavy, fried, or salty foods in the days leading up to the photoshoot. Additionally, steer clear of sun exposure to prevent sunburn or skin irritation.
Get a good night's sleep the night before the photoshoot, and aim to have a good sleep schedule in the week leading up to the photoshoot to avoid dark circles under your eyes.
Avoid Rushing
Allow yourself enough time to get to the photoshoot location and avoid feeling anxious. Check for traffic ahead of time and plan to arrive early rather than running late. On the day of the photoshoot, make sure not to schedule any other activities or appointments so that you can relax and move at a comfortable pace during the session.
Communicate with Your Photographer
If you have any specific style or location preferences, or if you have any questions or concerns, be sure to discuss them with your photographer beforehand. Your photographer will be more than happy to answer any questions and provide advice to help you feel more at ease during the photoshoot. Don't hesitate to ask any questions, big or small, before the photoshoot.
