How to get a Q's clue on Kickstarters

Now pay attention to 007. This Kickstarter is an absolute winner

Or how to get a Q’s clue on promoting kickstarters.

There are many kinds of Kickstarter, but one of the most popular is the small technological item. We all have that friend who bought an artificially intelligent beer cooler or a smart alarm clock that can read your snores and knows when to text work. You’re not coming in because you have a fantastic dream.

But how do you promote them and get the funding?

A good rule of thumb is to watch some old Connery or Moore-era James Bond and pay particular attention to Desmond Llewelyn’s marvelous performance as Q. You’re pitching your latest gadget to 007 because most of your investors are like that. Not necessarily a louche, hard-drinking government assassin (and Kickstarter doesn’t support weapons).

It would help if you impressed them with the uniqueness of your product, that it can’t be bought in stores or even Amazon, and they’re going to be ahead of the crowd. But ultimately, they’re disposable and likely to be abandoned in Blofeld’s sinking skull island. It should be helpful, affordable, and an expression of the users’ personality.

Now 007, remember these tips will help your Kickstarter impact a brick through a plate-glass window.

1        Set your price sensibly; if you have a cool idea, someone may be willing to send you $5 just to be associated with it or $20 for an acknowledgment. If you ask for $1,000,000, you look like you’re underrating everyone paying the $2500 you need. Most people want to pay what the product would cost if it were available on Amazon.

2        Know your market; if you’re selling a thermometer watch that texts somebody when you have a fever. Helicopter parents will love it; loner venture capitalists won’t; cute cuddly toy hand sanitizer dispensers are fun. 007 would probably use it to conceal a vodka martini.

3        Make sure you show. Don’t tell. Get as realistic a mockup as possible, shoot videos, photos, break them up with minimal text. Think would an excitable nine-year-old kid with $5000 go, “Awesome, dude!”
