How to get people to stop shaking hands, practice social distancing, and stay focused on priorities
It’s always important for leaders to role model the behaviors they want to see more of from their people—but never so much so as when you’re in the midst of a crisis.
During times of uncertainty people listen to their respected leaders to hear messages that reduce feelings of uncertainty, and increase feelings of confidence that “we have a solid plan for moving forward.” No surprise there, though it’s often challenging for leaders to fulfill this need. And in addition to listening, they’re also watching. Like it or not—whenever you’re not alone in a cave—you’re role modeling, big things and small.
Want people to stop shaking hands to reduce the transmission of a virus—then stop shaking hands. Need people to keep a healthy distance from others in the workplace? Do the same. Want people to stay calm and focused on priorities during a disruption to business—then stay calm and focused.
This is not rocket science—but for leaders right now it is mission-critical. And it does require deliberate effort and your ongoing attention.
Do something now: Identify two things that your people must do consistently and do well—then find a way to role model both, numerous times, in the next 24 hours.
