Let's begin by defining respect. The feeling of respect is elicited by someone's abilities, qualities, or achievements, after all it's human nature, isn't it? The desire to be viewed as intelligent, acknowledged, or accomplished.
There is a perception that respect was gained through aggressive behavior in the past. As a result, it goes hand in hand. Bullies at work and toxic workplaces have been in the headlines historically, especially in sectors like financial services and sales. Respect cannot be forced on someone.
Gaining respect is very different from just expecting it or taking it. There are some people who have the perception that they are entitled to respect.
When you demand respect, and I mean demand in a way that is respectful. It's not sustainable to take respect from others, is it? It is a false perception of respect.
You know, in certain industries, a respect is automatically given to those in positions of authority, rank, etc. However, that is not sustainable. It's just because of your position, department, or organization and the status you hold. As a result, you have the opportunity to take in respect, cultivate it correctly, and turn it into gained respect by giving value and attracting the value back to you.
One thing I think is that folks who automatically, I would say default to being treated with respect because of their rank, position, or title. Taking advantage of that is not sustainable because at minimum the folks are just doing it for the sake of doing it. They're giving you that respect, service level, and it's not deeper than that.
Why Aren't You Getting? The Respect You Deserve?
Being unappreciated, disrespected, or not receiving the respect you feel you deserve is human nature.
All of us have been there at some point in our lives. To begin with, ask yourself what respect means to you? You are treated according to how you treat yourself.
Lack of boundaries may be the result of not knowing how to respect oneself. Interactions that lack self-identification. Codependency can be seen in all of these examples.
Your answer may indicate that you have a codependent approach to interactions, seeking permission from others that you are the only one who can grant. Not feeling superior enough to make those kinds of decisions about yourself. All of these aspects should be considered! Don't be afraid to ask questions or make observations. Give yourself permission to begin, whatever you aren't doing, what you aren't aware of, or what you weren't taught!
Four main reasons in not getting respect:
1.You don't respect yourself and therefore it is hard for others to respect you.
2.You do not respect others,
3.There is no support for respectability in your environment. There is competition, gossip, etc.
4.You have an elevated sense of self. (You expect more than you deserve).
The 14 Keys To Gaining Respect @ Work:
1. Meet Deadlines
Holding yourself accountable by completing your tasks by the deadline shows your manager that you are reliable. If you think you won't accomplish the task by the set date, inform your manager and ask if the date can be adjusted. It shows that you care about the success of the project and that you have realistic expectations.
??2. Consistency Is Key:
It is one rule for them and one rule for us if people feel that way. As a result, people will lose their respect and not gain it.
You gain employers respect, or that of your colleagues, when it feels like you practice what you preach. For example if you want you teams in at a certain time, then as a leader you need to be there first and lead by example.
Follow the company's policies and codes of conduct as well. You will stand out in a positive way, especially if you work with people who are not so conscientious.
3. Be Respectful Of Your Colleagues
You can show respect to those you work with when you like them. Showing respect to those you feel have not earned it may be more difficult. The ability to demonstrate respect demonstrates that you can rise above personal animosity and work together for the good of your team and your organization.
4. Praise & Recognition:
Lack of recognition is the number one reason why people leave their employers. Be the first to congratulate your manager or team members, and foster an environment of recognition. It's important to praise your coworkers if they receive a promotion or a reward, even if they were chosen over you. By being professional and gracious with your coworkers, you may gain their respect.
5. Strong Communicator:
Communication is more important than ever before, especially in management and leadership roles, in presenting information in a timely manner that is understandable and effective. The communication of changes, in setup, or deadlines is important, as long as you do it well and communicate the message well, this will gain you respect, instead of disillusionment. Communicating transparently will increase your team's trust.
6. Good Listing Skills:
Almost everyone thinks they are good listeners, but when you do a listening exercise, you'll be amazed at how much you have missed. While you may have great ideas to share with your team, you are more likely to gain their respect if you are willing to listen to what they have to say first. Each person in the room was hired based on their abilities. The discussion can be enriched by everyone's perspective.
?7. Confidence Not Arrogance

Confident people elicit respect by showing confidence in themselves, in their actions, and in others' actions.
Your self-confidence can be seen in the way you perform your job with competence and enthusiasm. Additionally, you should have a plan in case you are laid off. As a result, you can be bold and creative, and perform your work without fear of losing your job. By being self-aware and creative, you might inspire your team to follow your lead.
?8. Rafal Nadal Humility:
Humility and confidence can go hand in hand. It is important to admit your mistakes and recognize the qualities of others if you are confident in yourself and your abilities. Despite his success in the world, Rafael Nadal is humble as a person in his dealings with people, how he interacts, and how he is. This merits him so much respect from his peers and his fans.
9. Patience Is A Virtue
Despite living in an instant gratification society, we all make mistakes at work and outside of work. Allowing room for people you manage, lead, and coworkers to develop, to learn, to become better, and to move on from mistakes will foster respect rather than impatience and instant results demands. Don't get me wrong, you do not want people who make mistakes, but you want them to learn from them, and to encourage a culture of risk taking, rather than fear of making mistakes, which inhibits innovation.
10. Being A Positive Force
Control your attitude, or it will control you. Team attitudes can be highly infectious and affect the team's performance. The attitude of one person can set the tone for the entire team. People will respect you if you can be a driving force of positivity and inspiration.
11. Ensuring Constructive Dialogues
You will at times hold a point of view that is different from the majority, even in the best of work environments. When you speak up and voice your opinion respectfully, you can gain respect from your co-workers and management.
12. Standards
When you set standards for what is expected at work and within your team, you can gain respect. A team with high and consistent standards performs best, whether it is a sports team or a work team.
??13. Be Professional
Respect elicits professionalism in your manner, presentation, conduct, how you handle situations, and how you behave in settings.
14. Make Yourself Bullet Proof:
A company, or a business, is bigger than anyone else. Nevertheless, you can make yourself as bulletproof and as difficult to replace as possible. Be a rock star for the company by demonstrating your skills, your diligence, your reliability, your value, and your results.
