How to Get Out of Being Average
Even as children, it’s hard to imagine anyone desiring to be average. No one wanted the average looking toy car or doll. As we grew up, no one mentioned wanting to go to an average college or have an average looking partner. No one said out loud a desire for an average job with an average paycheck. No one asks for directions to an average restaurant serving average food.
The only way to get out of an average lifestyle is to lead yourself out. No one is going to do it for you.
The first step in self-leadership is challenging your “assumed constraints.” ?If you listen closely, assumed constraints are evident.?It becomes obvious why we don’t have all we want in life.?
A few examples of “assumed constraints” include “my grandfather was a _______, my dad was a ______, I have to be a ______.?No one in my family ever went to college.?It’s not for me.?No one from my neighborhood ever makes it out.?My English isn’t very good.?I’m just lucky to have a job.?I didn’t finish school.?I have to do manual labor.”??I’m sure we can all think of other examples.?With these types of assumed constraints, does it sound like there is a possibility for a life of abundance?
We must ask ourselves, what assumptions do I need to challenge?
I want to discuss a specific “assumed constraint” many people have.?I’m talking about “the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.”?The financial figures are proof.?The middle class is diminishing.?The assumed constraint is there is nothing you can do about it. The truth is each of us can do something about it!
The first step to keep from joining the poor or becoming poorer is personal development.?Remember, we get what we deserve not what we want.
It’s much easier to blame the economy and be part of the masses than it is to take charge and be responsible for our own outcomes.
Decades ago, attending my first personal development seminar, I noticed who attended.?I thought there would be more people like me. I was struggling to get ahead and looking for ways to improve myself so I could in turn show others how to do the same.
Instead, I found individuals I considered successful, looking for ways to become even more successful.?It dawned on me; they were like professional athletes.?Although they are the most talented athletes in the world, they still have coaches.?They still work to get better.?Some pay for nutritionists to improve their diets; some have conditioning coaches, some have personal chiropractors, therapists, hypnotists, whatever they think will help them improve their abilities.?The bottom line is they are investing in themselves.
A lesson I’ve learned inviting people to go to leadership and personal development seminars is those that I think will benefit the most are always too busy to go.?Those experiencing success, who I figure won’t have time to attend, somehow always find a way to go.
We cannot expect others to invest in us if we aren’t willing to invest in ourselves.?It doesn’t have to be a financial investment.?We can invest our time in going to the library and reading books.?We can spend time on the internet. We can work out to improve our health, make better food choices, stop smoking, and eliminate sugar from our diets.
I used to find myself being extremely busy.?It took little time in personal development for me to realize I was busy being broke.?I’ve come to realize that there is a compound effect in life just like there is compounding interest in savings accounts.?We may not see instant results in personal development.?The same holds true working out and eating healthier.?But if we do them all consistently, over time we will begin to see little improvements, and eventually huge differences.?As we change, everything around us changes.?This includes our outlook, our responses, our relationships, and finances.
Personal development has positioned me to introduce others to the journey which will benefit us and also provide a positive ripple effect on our families and friends.?Comparing personal development to watching TV, I can’t say the same about any show I’ve ever watched.

Personal development does take commitment and continuous effort.?While thinking about it, remember no one has ever done anything of significance without both.?We can make a difference!
In closing, I will share this final thought today.?There is one word we can change in our vocabulary that can change our lives. This word change will give you power over your life.?It will give you accountability and responsibility.?It will remind you of the choices you do have. It will help you determine if you are making the right choice at any given moment. Are you ready? A little nervous??Willing to try it for a day? A week? To see the difference? Here we go…
The word to replace is “can’t.”?Now you’re probably thinking replace it with “can.” Nope.?The word to replace it with is “won’t.”?Try it out for a week.?See if it doesn’t change your life.?Instead of I can’t lose weight say I won’t lose weight; instead of I can’t find the time, say I won’t find the time; instead of I can’t focus to read, say I won’t focus to read; instead of I can’t help you, say I won’t help you.?I assure you, changing these two words will change your life!
Remember there is greatness within you. You must choose greatness. It won’t develop on its own.?I believe in you!
The poorest person isn’t the one without money, it’s the one without dreams.
