How To Get More Comfortable With Networking

Communications & Development Officer, Amber Solomon offers insight on getting more comfortable with networking.

Networking events are incredibly rewarding as they can help us build better personal brands, make connections, and expand our community. Here’s how to overcome your Zoom gloom and build back your networking muscles.

?●??????Create An Action Plan

Ask yourself what do you wish to gain from networking? What do you need from your community? Are you there to meet new people or foster an existing relationship? When you’ve answered these questions, make a goal to speak to at least three people before the end of the event.

?●??????Prepare Your Elevator Pitch and PRACTICE

Sum up who you are, what you do, and your why in 30 seconds. Play to your strengths in your introduction and end with a question about the other person. This provides a clear end to your pitch and marks the beginning of conversation.

?●??????Give Yourself An Ego Boost

Take a moment to prepare before walking into an event. Whatever the reason you’re attending, remind yourself that you have a lot to offer. You possess a unique voice and perspective that others may not have access to. You deserve to be there.

?●??????Introduce Yourself To The Event Organizer

If you are unsure where to begin or where to go next, seek out the event organizer. They’ll know who’s in attendance and with luck will make introductions for you.

?●??????Stay In Touch

Aim for deep relationships based on impact and you can easily grow your brand. Be sure to connect with people on LinkedIn or via email at least a couple of days after the event. Include a message thanking them for their time at the event.

Above all, relax. We’ve all been in a people fog for the past three years. It’s totally fine to feel like your skills are not as strong as they used to be. Just remember your why, your wow factor, and that everyone else is just as vulnerable as you are. Happy networking!
