How to Get Mentoring from Anyone

Imagine if you could get mentored by anyone, what would that allow you to do?

Jim Rohn once said “You're The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With”.

Who are your five people today?

What do you think would happen over the course of the next 12 months, if you upgraded those five to people who embody who you want to become in 5-10 years from today?

That’s what I call exponential growth. You accelerate your growth and “hack” your way into the future.


Your Five People

Look around you in business. Who do you spend most of your time with?

Co-workers, employees, business partners, peers?

At best, these may be people who are “at your level”. What do I mean by that?

People "at your level” embody the same standards as you do.

Standards could be standard of living, standards for how much you align your actions with your values, standards for what income you believe you deserve, standards for what level of revenues you believe your company deserves, etc.

When we have 3* standards, we ask 3* questions, get 3* answers and create 3* outcomes. Same happens with 4* and 5*.

So in my worldview, having 5* standards in everything is the only way to live. However, that requires that your environment supports you in those. Otherwise you’re up for a very hard journey ahead.


Upgrading Your Five People

Look at your goals in all areas of business and life. Anywhere from family to income to company growth to standard of living.

Who are the people who are already living these goals as their standards?

What do you think would happen if you spent dramatically more time with these five people than your current five people?

Of course, you can make up a story and tell yourself how hard it would be to find these people and then even harder to connect with them.

So let me destroy that story for you and give you some simple messages I have used to connect with people like that.

There are no excuses for not having the best mentors.


Founder of Consulting Firm

This is a message I sent to the founder of one of the world’s largest consulting firms. As I’m in the consulting business, I thought learning from him would be a good idea.

I’ll go for lunch with him mid of 2019.

CEO of CHF 200m Revenue Business

This is a message I sent to a CEO who grew his company from CHF 50m to CHF 200m within 8 years. Since I want to build a venture that goes ways beyond myself and creates value for millions of people, I thought I could learn a lot from him.

I had lunch with him 2 weeks ago and learned more about leadership and business growth in two hours than I could from reading 20 books.

Founder of High-Profit Company

This is a message I sent to the founder of a company with very high profit margins. I wanted to learn how he creates a sustainable business that grows 50% every year with large profit margins because with large profits you can make large investments in further growth and impact.

I met with him for a full day and even started a consulting project with his company.

The Only Shortcut to Growth

I believe mentoring is the only real shortcut to growth. It’s a way that works for everyone because everyone can have a different type of mentor and have a different way of receiving mentoring.

Other “shortcuts” are often more proclaimed in a way of “this is THE way of doing it”, which I don’t believe in.

However, I’m open to be challenged. Is there another growth shortcut that you believe works?

Of course, love the article. What we do during the #CEOCollabDay, the floagship programm of leadersbridge.org? is just that: "Upgrading Your Five People". The result: Everyone walk out of that day together with at least one, more so several ones, insights he or she can implement next day in their business or career.
