How to Get Leads From LinkedIn (the right way): Simple Steps

There is a right way and a wrong way to get leads from LinkedIn, in my opinion. While some might jump straight into the inbox, unsolicited, having never spoken to someone, I am not a fan of this approach. Most people agree: receiving a connection request followed immediately by a sales pitch is frustrating and off-putting. This approach has turned many away from using LinkedIn effectively.

LinkedIn is a digital networking platform designed to help businesses grow and people find new roles—not a direct sales platform.
We've all had these ??

So, what is the right way to get leads from LinkedIn? Here are some simple things you can do to help.

Use LinkedIn: Your Best Friend for Business

1. Grab a Copy of My Book “The LinkedIn Revolution: The Future of Sales and Marketing” is designed as a workbook to help you understand how to use LinkedIn to grow your business. It’s easy to follow and affordable at just £4.99 (or 99p on Kindle). This guide covers everything from setting up your profile to connecting with the right people and sharing content that gets noticed. Get your copy here .

2. Listen to This Podcast I recently recorded a podcast episode with Sondevelopment and ?? Steve O'Neill that gives more tips on using LinkedIn effectively. It’s packed with practical advice you can start using right away to boost your presence and attract leads. Listen to it here .

Improve Your LinkedIn Profile

1. Grow Your Network One of the biggest issues I see is people saying, “I share good stuff but never get any leads,” like Susan (totally made up name), who has only 102 connections. The bigger your network, the bigger your reach. There are 67k people on LinkedIn from Portsmouth alone. We need to have thousands in our networks to generate interest. Spend 30 minutes each day connecting with your ideal customers. Type the sector of your ideal customer in the LinkedIn search bar, and you can even filter by location. This simple habit will expand your network and increase your chances of getting noticed by potential clients. More connections mean more opportunities to showcase your business.

2. Add a Background Banner Make sure your profile has a background banner that shows what your business does. A visually appealing banner catches the eye and immediately tells visitors what you’re all about. Think of it as a billboard for your business—make it clear and attractive. Add your contact details.

3. Update Your ‘About’ Section Rewrite your ‘About’ section to focus on how you help your clients and solve their problems. Instead of talking only about what you do, highlight the benefits and solutions you provide. For example, if you help businesses save time with efficient bookkeeping, make that the star of your ‘About’ section.

Engage and Grow

1. Share Useful Content Regularly post content related to your industry. This shows you’re knowledgeable and helps attract people interested in what you offer. Share tips, industry news, or behind-the-scenes looks at your business. Consistent, valuable content keeps you on your connections’ radar and positions you as an expert.

2. Join Groups Get involved in LinkedIn groups related to your business. Share your insights and join conversations. Being active in these groups boosts your visibility and helps you build relationships with potential leads. Don’t just join—participate regularly by posting, commenting, and offering help.

3. Engage with Others Take time daily to build relationships with those in your industry and your ideal customers. Comment on their posts, share their content, and build genuine relationships. This engagement can lead to more meaningful connections and eventually, leads.

Getting leads for your business from LinkedIn doesn’t have to be hard. By using LinkedIn wisely, connecting with others, and sharing valuable content, you can attract more leads. The key is consistency and providing real value. If you have any questions or need more help, I am all ears!

I look back at my messages years ago, it was always a pitch slap and embarrassing. I was hungry and used Linkedin solely for growing business which 10 or 15 years ago it was used for but times have changed right. Building content doesn't come natural to me, I'm experimenting with different stuff, growing the right followers will grow sales organically. You have to become your "own media" company in LinkedIn to get ahead. Shout the loudest, be the most popular (with good content) really does translate into getting more business. Not a dinosaur just yet ??
