How to get kids to love reading books?

We know sometimes it feels like the most hard question to answer. A kid always associates books with a burden or homework because of his experience with books in school. Those heavy bags seem like a burden. But at home, you have the power to change that experience.

But how do we get them excited about cracking open a book in a world overflowing with digital distractions?

It's quite hard to set up a routine with many other extra-curricular activities going on sports, music classes, art classes and so much more. But Let’s be real! It’s not an impossible task. Here are 5 Tips to ignite your kid’s love of Reading:

  1. Be a Bookworm yourself: Kids are like little sponges, soaking up everything we do. Make it a habit to read for pleasure yourself, even if it’s just for 20 minutes a day. First, set an example then ask them to follow!
  2. Make reading a joyful experience: Let the kids choose the book according to their interest whether it's arts, science, robotics, fairytales, or stories. Turn the reading session into a dramatic tale with performance and silly voices.
  3. Do it together: Don’t just give a book to a child and expect he will read it in a day or two. Get involved with him while reading, and spare 10 –15 minutes before bedtime to read a book together.
  4. The Library is Your Playground: Take regular trips to the library and let your child loose. Explore different sections, participate in story time, and pick out a mountain of books to bring home.
  5. Keep it short but consistent: Remember children's focus is too short compared to an adult. The best way to follow is to read the book in parts and stay consistent. Make this a daily habit thus leading your small steps into forming a real habit.

By incorporating these simple tips into your routine, you’ll be well on your way to raising a bookworm and fostering a lifelong love of reading in your child.

And here’s the Big News! Do you know we also have our Reading sessions held online where we discuss some amazing books and do some fun activities? It’s free, the only thing that is required is your commitment.
