How To Get A Job.

Feeling lost?

Alone?

No direction?

No job?

Nobody cares?

Here's a home truth...

NOBODY CARES ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEMSELVES.

AND this has always been the case.

Even when doing good deeds for charity or raising your children, it's all about how much better you feel when doing the right thing.

It's nature's free high to continue the species and it works.

We can rationalize and call it benevolence, but it's still about us.

So if you want to get a job, you have to start with the question...

WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM - if they hire me?

Raise that up above the quagmire or recruitment company letters, first and second interviews, rejections, travel and financial issues.

You have to do this. Otherwise you will be working on a completely different question...

WHY I NEED THIS JOB?

The potential employer already knows the answer to that.

  • You need money.
  • You need self-esteem.
  • You need a career.
  • You need safety in a growing business.
  • Etc

Big deal.

Not their problem.

They are only concerned with what YOU bring to the table.

I can tell you with a huge level of certainty what you are going to get paid in your next job...

About the same as you got in your last job.

Why?

Because most people apply for similar paying jobs to what they just left/lost.

Also, because that's a major way that people calculate their worth to the job market and potential future employers.

Why limit yourself to that?

If you have nothing right now, aim higher.

If you lose your job in the future and have lived the same lifestyle as before, you'll have save a small fortune which will act as a financial buffer next time.

Here's the formula for getting paid...

  1. The effect of the job you are doing (the solution you provide).
  2. How cheaply you can be replaced by someone else.

Nothing to do with enjoying your amazing company, the way you do your hair, that smile or the way you make jokes when you are nervous.

Just that you were the best hire that could be made at the time (and probably still are).

So become invaluable.

In that crappy 3-30 minute interview, you have to prove that you are the most cost effective solution for their headache.

I am not talking about bringing your price down.

If anything, diversify and bring your price up.

Doctors earn good salaries, but specialists earn more.

Why?

We need them more at certain times of our lives.

When asked the question about how much would you pay for a life-saving operation, the answer has to be WHATEVER IT TAKES.

If you can do the same job as the person before and after you, you need another edge.

Be motivated and prove it.

Yes, that's a vague statement.

Yes, it's meant to be.

Start Googling for clues.

Also 'Wow' them.

People hire humble superstars given a choice.

Someone who is a potential leader but will still accept their direction and guidance.

They also prefer to head hunt over giving someone a first job or hiring a long term unemployed person.

If it's your first time to work, or you've been out of work for ages or you've been stuck in a dead end job for so long, it's sucked out your will to live, here's a cool solution for you...

Invent a Trojan Horse Project.

The legendary Wooden Horse of Troy, was created by the Greek navy to trick the Trojan army into letting them inside their city. The massive wooden structure looked like a gift but was actually a clever vehicle to fool the Trojans into taking it home and through the previously impregnable walls.

Once inside, the hidden soldiers, sneaked out, killed the guards who blocked the gates and let the Greek army in to invade and eventually take the city.

It's one of the most innovative business moves in military history.

So how does this help you?

Simple. Create a Trojan Horse Project.

Invent a way to prove that you are ALREADY doing the job they want you for (or something similar) BEFORE you get there.

Treat it like an unpaid job, or a hobby, or a voluntary position.

Make it look credible and have real results and testimonials to prove you can do it.

Nobody wants to take risks on a long shot, they want certainty.

Show them there is no risk and that without their help, you will do this anyway.

This also helps in many other ways:

  • Keeps you busy.
  • Gives you purpose.
  • Boosts your self-esteem.
  • Can earn you kudos (and maybe cash).
  • Stops you looking or feeling desperate when you go for your next interview.

Remember, you don't have to tell them the entire truth about it being a freebie.

You took the project as a consultant and are looking for better opportunities now.

Cool idea?

No?

Think about it a little longer then. Trust me, it bridges all kinds of gaps.

So in summary...

  1. Everyone cares about themselves first.
  2. The world doesn't owe you a living.
  3. You need to forget what you want and consider what they are looking for.
  4. The formula for getting paid means that the more rare your in-demand talent is, the higher salary you can demand and expect people to pay.
  5. You need to be a motivated, humble superstar.
  6. If you create a Trojan Horse Project you can prove your suitability to their job BEFORE working for them.
  7. YOU CAN DO THIS...
