How to get a job as COO without submitting your resume

It has been awhile since I wrote an article. Well, life and work got in the way . But I promise you there will be some stories to tell.

In early June this year , I got the role of an accidental COO - Chief Operations Officer of a SAAS company. The funny thing is I did not submit a resume nor applied for the position but I have a feeling my LINKEDIN Profile was the key to getting this post.

After meeting the CEO, I knew he needed help in the operations so I offered to help for a short time only just to get a team going. My vast experience in fast construction projects was the foundation that gave me the natural reflex to do this job. And from day 1 , no day was same as the other.

As Chief Operations Officer I had to wear many hats. The one thing I like about startups is you get to do as many roles as you can to quickly get a team together and run the operations from the ground up. No bureaucracies , no glass ceiling to break , just the wide open road to build as fast as you can to rack up sales and awareness of your services. For a minority Asian immigrant woman this is certainly a role that does not pass by everyday.

As a semi-retired freelancer , going back to corporate work was like ... wait a moment there are certain rules that I would have to abide by. I have more days behind me than in front of me . I need to be careful with time not being wasted. I call this the rules of I STILL GOT TIME.

1. Work has to be remote.
2. Work cannot be a stressful life.
3. Work has to take second priority over meaningful activities such as time for family , loved ones and the favorite destinations I still need to savor.

Life of a SAAS COO

Software SAAS companies are all about design and speed in execution to market. Our product started in SMS Text Blast Notification and we have also added another premium product with VIDEO ADS - Videos with click to call action buttons on it that you can push in the video to call a phone number.

As COO, I had the rare privilege of suggesting future products that will be out for implementation. I told the millenial development team and CEO that as a baby boomer buying products in the 1980's were only limited to infomercials and 800 dial up numbers for quick orders. There was no such thing as the internet. So I wanted to duplicate the ease of the experience.

If I were watching a video , I would want to push a button on that video and just call the phone and have another human being there take my order or help me out. After many weeks of development , tweaks and redesigns , sleepless nights, a champion product is born.

By the way , I am a content creator , so minus the COO title , I still do some of the corporate videos and teach the younger staff how to do it as well. It is the work I do enjoy charging the creative juices everyday. Being able to do your own marketing script and video is such a powerful enabler for startups since there is not enough time and the message has to get out the door.

In this day and age of silent quitting , people are realizing in droves that life and work need to have a balance. I appreciate more what life has to offer with internet speed of connection and more than ever since I lived in a chapter of history when commute was an accepted fact for work and climbing the corporate ladder. Now I can work remotely, with global teams and customers and what matters is that I feel joy in my work even during my senior years when the physical body feels more aches and pains after a long tiring day!
