Last week (see the article) we’ve explored how you could use the end of the year efficiently to reflect on your career goals and to prepare for job search. As you surely know, preparation is key for succeeding in any project. The same is true for job searching. If you add to preparation an efficient job hunt strategy, you can be sure that success is on the way.
Now, let’s dive into the last 5 steps of our guide, to help you secure that job in 2020.
Step 6: Set up a Job Alert
As we all know job search can be quite daunting. Often, we hear that searching for a job is almost a full-time job on itself. To avoid being overwhelmed, you must put into place systems or strategies that make your life easier.
Job alerts are extremely helpful when it comes to job search because you don’t have to manually search every day from scratch. That would have been too time consuming.
From different job boards, you can set up job alerts that will do the work for you. They will send the job that fit your criteria directly to your email. You can also choose to have multiple job alerts within a same job board website. What’s great is that you can change your preferences at any time.
Step 7: Apply Every Day
Once your job alert has been set up, you will decide which jobs you want to apply for. The best is to apply every day as it will help you keep the momentum. A routine will keep you going. Soon, sending application daily will be like second nature.
How many resumes to send you might ask. The number doesn’t really matter.
Quality over quantity is always best because the effort you put in your application will make a big difference.
Step 8: Beware of your Social Media
Clean up posts or anything that might jeopardise your chance to get a job. Be sure that if an employer or recruiter is interested in your profile, you can be almost certain that an online search will be undertaken.
Generally, social media history will come up first unless you’ve got a blog where you write regularly. They would be looking for patterns or anything that help or fail your profile.
So, make sure that you’re ‘clean’ by removing any comments or posts that don’t support your application.
Step 9: Perfect Your Interview Skills
Now you’ve started sending applications out there, get ready for your first impression during your conversation with recruiters.
Beware, many of you have failed at the interview stage. It is one thing to write a powerful cover letter and an impressive resume. But, it’s another thing to be able to excel in an interview.
That’s why perfecting your interview skills is a must for getting the job you deserve.
There are numerous interview techniques that already exist which are genuine and where you can get inspiration from.
At IC-Career Coaching, we also help for interview preparation. Learn more
Also, do not underestimate your stress level especially if you are a shy job-hunter. Because of stress, all your effort can vanish within a few minutes during a job interview.
Feeling stressed is quite normal and common but when it paralyses you to a point where you can’t express freely, your chances will get slimmer. Learning to overcome your fear, stress and anxiety is very crucial if you want to be the perfect candidate.
Step 10: Job Search Mentoring
As we’ve already mentioned, job search can be tiring. The process can be very long until you land your dream job. You might be lucky and get a job within one or two months. But, it’s not always the case. Job hunting requires a lot of time and effort.
The good news is you don’t have to do it all alone.
Do you know that there are career consultants who can help you find your perfect job?
This is what we do at IC Career Coaching. We do the ‘boring’ part for you. Based on your skillset and your aspirations, we select very targeted and tailored jobs, set up jobs alert and put into place a whole system that would make the process useful.
We can understand that Job search mentoring is not really part of your vocabulary. You’d be amazed if we tell you we’ve helped many job hunters find the job of their dream.
Why don’t you try it for yourself?
You’ll partner with an expert who will put your job hunting to another level.
In conclusion, although 2019 is around the corner, the end of the year is the perfect time to redefine your career objectives, prepare your job search and get ready for the new year.
