How NOT to Get Hired

How NOT to Get Hired

Or, why you are shooting yourself in the foot every time you apply for a job.

I know that unemployment is at a record low. However, from the looks of job applicants I get, there is this silent minority that I feel is not getting hired, and is shooting themselves in the foot every time they apply for a job. These people are not counted among the unemployed because they have been unemployed for too long even to receive benefits, they are woefully underemployed or stuck at the wrong job.

So I just posted a job for two health coaches:

https://indeedhi.re/37s8SFp

These are good jobs where folks can make upwards of $70k+.

I always ask for a thoughtful cover letter where I ask a few brief questions to get to know the applicant. Wouldn't you know it, 99.99% of people don't even read the ad they are applying for! Or are too lazy to care about any of the requirements.

These are people who must struggle with finding a job, since they are competing with people who actually read and follow directions.

My advice to you is, please, follow directions when applying for a job.

Applying for jobs should be QUALITY over quantity. It's better to write a great cover letter and send the RIGHT resume (more about that later) and do that three times per day instead of applying to three hundred jobs with a template cover letter or no cover letter at all and a generic resume.

Better yet, my clients don't even apply for jobs. They skip the process altogether. Instead, they become masters of the strategic job search. 70% of jobs aren't on job sites and recruiters only have 4% of the listings.

With the right strategy, it's possible to skip the hiring line, skip HR, and go directly to hiring managers. These are folks who are eager and nervously waiting for an applicant to knock on their door with leadership skills who will make their life better.

Over 90% of my clients succeed by applying this strategy:

  1. They optimize their LinkedIn and create custom resumes for their top 3 positions. They learn how to leverage social media to look like a million bucks in the eyes of decision makers.
  2. They make a "hit list" of their top 25 or 50 companies and find the decision makers at these companies (not HR folk).
  3. Create eyeball grabbing messages to reach out to these decision makers.
  4. They work with an interview coach to craft their message and look like a winner.
  5. They get asked to apply to open positions. BOOM!

Decision makers want to talk to leaders. Are you positioned as one?

Happy to send anyone a more detailed video about this process if you are interested or get on the phone with you. Of course, having someone certified in Strategic Job Search certainly helps. You can reach out to me at 786-440-7486 (office line, not cell).

But please, if you are still convinced applying to jobs, like everyone else, is the way to go, do it with care and patience.

Remember, quality wins every time.
