How to Get Good at Asking for Support

Having a support system to catch us when we fall allows us to constantly shift our beliefs of what’s possible. Despite what most of us assume, support is not a sign of weakness but strength.

It’s good for our well-being. It develops our confidence in a MUCH deeper and longer-lasting way than it would with quick successes. And it adds an extra layer of motivation as we feel compelled to succeed.

Which areas could you use some support from others? Is it fresh perspectives, meaningful connections, role-playing or just holding of your vision as you take a risk?

But how do we go about asking for support? It starts with simply flexing the muscle. If you’re someone uncomfortable with relinquishing control or are scared of falling because you don’t have a net of support, here are three things to build up a good support system.?

  1. Reflect: Take stock of your current situation and identify what steps you’ll need to take to get to where you want to be in the future. Question what it feels like when you don’t have support. What are the signs? What is at risk if you go on unsupported??
  2. Plan: Identify what a support team looks like. Who is involved? What boundaries might you need to set? Show yourself compassion and stop feeling you have to do everything yourself. We don’t need to shoulder the burden alone; if we ask for help, no one is saying we won’t reap the rewards of our hard work.
  3. Practice: It’s okay to ask for more support than you’ll actually need. Check-in with yourself regularly, and ask: What do I need right now for support? Schedule weekly or bi-monthly meetings with a trusted core group to check-in. Write out your leaps ahead of time. And truly step into each experience.

The best leaders know asking for support only makes them stronger. Push beyond your comfort zone and step into your true power alongside others who are championing you.

“Stay healthy, have fun with it, and embrace all the moments. Because anything can happen.” - Simone Biles
