The setup: It’s the end of the workweek and even though she’s always busy, Sally pledges that this upcoming weekend will be full of nothing but relaxation and connecting with family. Joey, her witty mentor, has a winning formula to help his friend truly unwind.
Here's their conversation over a cup of hot coffee!
I’m really looking forward to this weekend, Joey! Because I’m going to do absolutely nothing at all!
Joey’s heard this one before. In fact, just last Monday morning he remembers Sally bemoaning how being “always-on” with her technology made her weekend feel as stressful as her week. Still, he humors her.
"A little zen for you, huh? I won’t text you about work then ;)," Joey winks.??
Sally shrugs her shoulder and stirs her coffee lightly as if it's no big deal and says something that really gets Joey rattled up!
Oh, you still can. I mean, I’ll have my phone right by me. But I’m totally not going to look at it, only in emergencies. And between heats at my daughter’s swim meet. And maybe during previews for the movie I’m seeing on date night.
"Wait a minute," Joey gets a little pesky and direct and says, "If you can’t let go of your devices, you’re not taking good care of yourself, Sally. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, is this:
Self-care is a winning habit.
In fact, 60% of adults say weekends and vacations don’t alleviate their stress - but those same people also say they check their phones multiple times a day when they’re supposed to be on break."
Sally has a brief moment of panic. “I don’t want my family to think they’re less important than my phone!” she says.
To lighten the situation, Joey quickly take out his phone and shows her a picture from Pinterest and jokingly says - "You don't want to be this person" ??????
As Sally gets a bit emotional and realizes the gravity of the situation, Joey brings up a new idea to get her mind moving in the right direction.
Well, then show them your true priorities by taking a "digital detox."
This weekend, take care of yourself and your family by practicing a little DLR.
Most weekends, I wake up early and work on things I need to get done but as soon as my family is up, here's how I and even you can practice DLR:
Drop it: Switch off your phone for a day and feel the freedom ??
Lose it: Keep it somewhere far away from the place you’re spending time with your family. ??
Remove it: Disable all notifications and alerts. ??
Sally’s determined to make this weekend the one in which she prioritizes pure relaxation and family time. “Sounds like I’m ghosting you this weekend, Joey!” she says. “I promise it’s nothing personal.”
Leaderpoint: Your priorities are what you DO and not what you SAY.
Question: Will Sally do a "digital detox" this weekend and should you do the same?
