How to Get the Click!

How to Get the Click!

Ever wondered how some email marketers get clickthrough rates that make you weep a little?

You wonder how they do so well?

Here are five steps to help you get more email clicks, and better open rates overall:

1. Keep it short and sweet

A short email message will increase clickthroughs because people assume an email that isn't long is not a sales pitch. They want something easy to digest with no muss or fuss. The shorter the email, the more incentive there is for them to just click through -- especially if the subject line is eye-catching. Make articles relevant and tempting enough so readers can read them in one sitting without feeling icky from information overload.

2. Say "click here"

Contrasting colors work well in encouraging email clicks because they attract attention, as do photographs and italics. But email marketers use contrasting colors sparingly, so they don't overwhelm the email message. Instead of bolding any text in your email, try putting a black box around certain phrases or paragraphs. This will automatically make the words stand out without overwhelming the visual design of your email.

3. Get to the point fast

A quick email is faster to read, increasing clicks because it offers a quicker experience than long-winded articles that require lots of scrolling, waiting for page load times and skipping over parts that seem irrelevant or redundant (did I really need all those details about your company's history?)

4. Make it personal if you can

If you're email marketing to people who know you, be as personal as possible. Know their names and email them using the name they prefer (is it Mr. Smith or John?). Don't just email "Dear Sir," even if you're emailing a bunch of men, because that will come off as impersonal and distant.

5. Use a catchy subject line

If your email message is short enough to read in one sitting, the best way to get someone's attention is with an attention-grabbing email subject line. Ask yourself, what would I click on? And then make sure your subject lines are eye-catching but relevant so subscribers don't feel duped into reading about something they aren't interested in. Put the most important word first: You'll increase email clicks with an action oriented start that encourages email recipients to read on..

The most important aspect of email marketing is not just list size or number of email messages sent, but the email open rate. Right now I'm getting a 13% email open rate -- that means out of every 100 emails I send, 13 are actually opened. That's pretty decent (for an email marketing newbie like me). It can be tricky trying to figure out what works and doesn't work in terms of email subject lines to increase email clicks. What do you think? How have you improved your email click through rates?
