How to Get Ahead of 99% in the Gym (In Just 6-12 Months)

How to Get Ahead of 99% in the Gym (In Just 6-12 Months)

Most people spend years in the gym and barely change.

They lift, follow the usual advice, even track their food—but months go by, and they still look exactly the same.

Meanwhile, there’s always that handful of people who skyrocket past everyone else.

You’ve seen them. The guy who’s only been training a year but looks like he was sculpted out of granite. The woman who made a ridiculous transformation in 12 months while you’re still trying to drop the same 10 pounds.

So, you start wondering:

  • Are they genetically blessed?
  • Are they taking something?
  • Why am I stuck while they keep improving?

I used to think the same thing.

Then I figured it out.

And if you apply what I’m about to tell you, you’ll be ahead of 99% of people in the gym—without spending years making the same mistakes.

Let’s get into it.

1. Stop Setting Goals—Start Building an Identity

When I first started lifting, my goal was simple: lose fat.

For a while, I went all in. Meal prepping, tracking, and grinding in the gym.

Then life happened. Work stress, bad days, low motivation—I’d fall off track, then restart the cycle all over again.

Because fitness was just something I did, not who I was.

That’s why most people struggle.

They chase outcomes instead of becoming the kind of person who naturally achieves them.

James Clear puts it best: “Your identity is not set in stone. You have a choice in every moment.”

People who keep weight off long-term don’t just follow a plan—they become the kind of person who lifts, who eats well, who moves daily.

How to Make This Shift

Instead of saying:

  • “I need to lose weight.” Say:
  • “I am someone who lifts three times a week.”
  • “I am someone who walks 10,000 steps a day.”

Then? Prove it to yourself with small wins.

  • Want to train more? Buy dumbbells or join a gym, set a schedule, start with 15 minutes.
  • Want to move more? Track your steps, start with a 10-minute walk, build up over time.

Most people chase goals. The successful ones become the type of person who naturally achieves them.

2. Master the Skill Most Lifters Never Learn: Delayed Gratification

When I started training, I thought results would come fast.

Because why wouldn’t they?

We live in a world where you can order food with one tap and binge an entire series in a day. Instant gratification is everywhere.

So, you train hard for a whole month… and look in the mirror expecting magic.

And what do you see?

Pretty much the same person staring back.

That’s where most people give up.

The Harsh Truth No One Wants to Hear

If you want to be ahead of 99% of people in the gym, you need to play the long game.

  • One workout won’t change you.
  • Ten workouts won’t change you.
  • Fifty workouts won’t change you.

But hundreds of workouts, done consistently over time? That’s when you start seeing the difference.

It’s like slow-roasting a steak instead of microwaving a frozen dinner. Sure, both will fill you up—but one is actually worth the wait.

3. Consistency, No Matter What

Nobody brags about being consistent.

No one flexes about showing up when they didn’t feel like it. No one posts before-and-after pictures of the 1,000 small, boring decisions that actually made the difference.

But that’s what separates the ones who succeed from the ones who keep starting over.

Because motivation? It’s flaky at best. It hypes you up one day and ghosts you the next.

And results? They take longer than you want to admit.

So how do you actually stay consistent when life gets in the way?

Because it will.

  • Work stress.
  • Family obligations.
  • A bad night’s sleep that somehow ruins your entire day.

One missed session turns into two… then three. Suddenly, you’re saying “I’ll start fresh next week”—which is just code for “I’ll repeat this cycle forever.”

How to Break This Pattern for Good

Most people think being consistent means trying harder. It doesn’t.

It means removing the need for motivation altogether.

That means:

  • A set workout schedule (not just “when I feel like it”).
  • A nutrition plan (not just “eating healthy when it’s convenient”).
  • A clear WHY—because showing up gets easier when you know who benefits from your success.

Ask yourself:

  • Who else is impacted when you’re at your best?
  • Your kids? Your partner? Your parents?
  • Who else benefits when you are stronger, healthier, and happier?

When your fitness plan stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like a standard, staying on track gets a hell of a lot easier.

4. Lean on the Fundamentals (They Never Stop Working)

When I got down to 5% body fat, people kept asking me:

"What’s your secret?!"

Honestly? I didn’t have one.

I was just doing the fundamentals really well—nothing extreme, nothing complicated.

  • Eating in a calorie deficit
  • Lifting with progressive overload
  • Getting 10-15k steps a day
  • Eating enough protein
  • Prioritising whole, nutrient-dense foods
  • Sleeping 7-8 hours a night
  • Tracking progress and pivoting when necessary

No gimmicks. No shortcuts. No magic tricks.

Why Most People Fail: The Endless Search for “Faster”

Most people aren’t looking for what works—they’re looking for what works faster.

  • The “shredded in 30 days” programs.
  • The magic diets that melt fat overnight.
  • The quick fixes and hacks.

But results don’t come from secrets. They come from doing the right things, consistently, over time.

And when you stick to the fundamentals long enough, the results become inevitable.

Final Thoughts: What Separates You From Everyone Else

The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t?

It’s not genetics. It’s not some secret hack.

It’s this:

  • Reshaping your identity—seeing yourself as the person who does this, no matter what.
  • Mastering delayed gratification—playing the long game instead of chasing quick fixes.
  • Staying consistent—even when motivation is nowhere to be found.
  • Leaning on the fundamentals—because they never stop working.

Master these?

And you’ll be ahead of 99% of people in the gym—within six months.

In 12 months?

People will be asking you what you’re taking.

But here’s the real question:

Are you willing to do what most people won’t?

Because that’s the difference.

I agree! As one of Adam’s Nutrition Essentials course students, you must ‘Lean on the Fundamentals’ - because this is the nuts and bolts - a complete system that works and never stops working. Are you willing to do what most people won’t? Or, - Something else is holding you back? - You can’t just stick to the plan? - You don’t have the time, you’ll get back to it later, you’ve got a lot on your plate at the moment… Are you going to keep distracting, deflecting, delaying? ? A coach like Adam, or myself, can show you what you are doing, what you need to do AND keep you accountable.
