? Prevention, promotion, personalization, and natural solutions are my first lines of defense for staying healthy, happy—and yes, even wealthy. ??

As individuals and companies, stronger health means greater success. As members of society, we have the power to shape a healthcare system that prioritizes prevention, promotes well-being, and embraces natural, personalized solutions.

This is the conversation we’re having on The Microdose Diet podcast: health as the foundation of success + the future of health.

Let’s explore the tools and strategies to help you thrive while shaping the future of wellness. ??

Welcome to The Microdose Diet newsletter! In this edition, we’re diving into a fascinating conversation with Mendel Erlenwein, a true trailblazer in healthcare innovation. Mendel is the founder and CEO of two transformative companies—CareCo and Previva Health Group—and the host of the Healthcare Trailblazers Podcast. His work is centered on using generative AI and preventive care coordination to reshape how we approach chronic illnesses and healthcare inefficiencies.

??Preventive Care Coordination: A Game-Changer

Mendel’s journey began six years ago when he took over a modest care coordination service and transformed it into a thriving enterprise. His primary focus? Preventive telephonic care coordination for patients with chronic illnesses. Through programs like Chronic Care Management (CCM), Mendel’s team proactively engages patients, helping them manage their conditions and stay out of hospitals.

Key Highlights from Previva Health Group:

  • Proactive Outreach: Patients with two or more chronic conditions receive monthly check-ins and personalized care plans.
  • Cost Reduction: Improved medication adherence and early intervention lead to fewer hospital visits and reduced healthcare costs.
  • Proven Success: Medicare has increased reimbursement rates for CCM programs by nearly 50%, recognizing their efficacy.

“When care coordination is done well, it becomes the common thread weaving through the entire patient experience,” Mendel explains. “It’s about ensuring patients receive consistent, compassionate care no matter where they are in their health journey.”

??The Role of Generative AI in Healthcare

Mendel’s second venture, CareCo, was born out of his deep understanding of care coordination and his desire to enhance it through generative AI. He believes in “building the brain to amplify the heart”—using AI to handle data-intensive tasks while leaving the empathetic, human-centered work to care coordinators.

How CareCo Uses Generative AI:

  • Call Guides: AI-driven insights provide care coordinators with personalized talking points, making patient interactions more meaningful.
  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: From call documentation to task creation, AI streamlines workflows, reducing burnout.
  • Enhanced Patient Outcomes: By augmenting care coordinators’ capabilities, AI enables better patient engagement and improved health results.

“Humans excel at empathy; AI excels at data analysis,” Mendel says. “When combined effectively, the result is transformative for both patients and care providers.”

??Why Prevention Matters More Than Ever

Mendel emphasizes that preventive care is the cornerstone of value-based healthcare. Drawing an analogy to routine maintenance on a water machine, he illustrates the long-term cost savings of proactive interventions versus reactive care. For instance, a $50 investment in preventive measures can save thousands in future medical costs.

Despite these clear benefits, Mendel acknowledges the challenges in quantifying the ROI of preventive care, which can slow its adoption. “It’s about going back to common sense,” he says. “We know that healthy behaviors lead to better outcomes. The key is aligning incentives to prioritize prevention.”

??Engaging Patients: A Call to Action

One of the most thought-provoking parts of our conversation was Mendel’s approach to patient engagement. He believes the key lies in uncovering each patient’s personal “why.” Whether it’s attending a loved one’s wedding or enjoying life’s milestones, connecting health behaviors to meaningful outcomes can inspire action.

Mendel also notes a generational shift in healthcare attitudes. Younger patients are more informed and proactive, thanks to tools like ChatGPT, which empower them to ask better questions and advocate for their health.

??The Future of Telemedicine

The rise of telemedicine has been another game-changer in healthcare. While Mendel sees it as a vital tool for increasing access and reducing disparities, he cautions against over-reliance on remote care. “A balance is essential,” he says. “Telehealth should complement, not replace, in-person care.”

Speaking Engagements: Engage with transformative talks that inspire action and provide tools for balance, prevention, and peak professional performance.

??Pearls of Wisdom

Mendel’s closing advice is simple yet profound: “Start with yourself. Consider your health an investment and commit to your own care coordination. Whether it’s diet, exercise, or medication adherence, small steps can lead to significant change.”

??Final Thoughts

This conversation with Mendel Erlenwein underscores the power of innovation and human connection in healthcare. By blending generative AI with empathetic care coordination, we can create a system that’s not only more efficient but also more compassionate.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Until next time, remember: your health is your greatest wealth.

Mendel Erlenwein made a parallel between health prevention and preventive maintenance for things (water coolers in his example), a way better ressources allocation to prevent challenges than to fix them. Well I am getting a perfect example of that as on cue today - we were sloppy and didn’t get our furnace maintained last summer …and it broke down during the night! Now I am sick at home without heat. Prevention always wins!!
